Reader KWL comments that Meijer now carries variable-load $20-$500 Mastercard gift cards, I assume they carry Visa’s as well. Previously, $200 was the highest.
Additionally, the Meijer coupons (sample) work on these variable load cards as well. Even sweeter.
I’ll update our list of Grocery Stores That Sell $500 Giftcards with the new information.

Seems like this varies by the locations and times, maybe they had the $500 ones for the Christmas season? I was able to find variable MC cards up to $500 last fall and winter but now they seems to stop both MC and Visa at $200 limit and fee increased to 6.95 (+$1). I was only able to find the $200 cards in stock when they had the $10 off coupon.
I had a miserable time with a Meijer variable load Mastercard Debit Card. (I bought it in January, and din't know the $500 variaable debit cards were new there.) I received a receipt saying my card had been activated for $410. Of course, I was charged the $410. But, my card was never activated.
Metabank (the issuer) said take it up with Meijer. Meijer agreed there was a mistake on their end -- their records said both that the card was activated and also that it was not activated. But, they would not give me a refund, replacement, or even a store credit.
Meijer wrote down an 800 number for someplace that Meijer said could fix the problem. But Mejer didn't even know the place's name. No one ever answered the phone there.
This lead to me screaming at lot at customer service. Six days after I first approached Meijer's with the problem, a $410 credit appeared on my credit card.
This has ruined my opinion of Meijer's. I am now reluctant to buy anything at Meijer's that is more expensive than a pair of socks. I have spent a fortune at their pharmacy over the years and I am thinking of switching pharmacies. I want someone else to have my multi-thousand dollar a year pharmacy business.
I had a similar issue and called Meijer corporate and after a little bit of follow up, I received a replacement card. There is someone in charge of gift cards there and she can fix everything. Problems happen.
In my area in Michigan I did see 500$ variable VGC from Metabank.
i find that grocery store GC availability is extremely varied.
some people claim they can't find $500 or variable load GC in the grocery store chain i shop at in my city.
but in my part of town, they're always available. i'm never too keen on sharing this info myself. ymmv.
$500 MGC's have been available in my region since they opened over a year ago. Not new news.
Cool, not everyone is in your region. Mine just started carrying them this week, so it is new news to some people.
My location has always carried them as well but new news for some poeple who may not know.
One Meijer by me has carried these at least since the beginning of the year. Not all Meijer have had them to.
Meijer (at least in the Chicago suburbs) has stocked variable mastercards (up to $500) for several years (and coupons do work on these). However, they do not stock the variable visas.
I just went to Meijer to pick up a $500 Mastercard and they had variable Visas up to $500 as well (Chicago suburb).
I believe that Meijer does carry a "Variable Visa" with a $200 limit. (Not that it matters...)
How are you getting rid of MC? I thought you couldn’t buy a money order with MC.
Load the funds onto another card would be my best guess.
Same here (in regards to visa)
I'll update the Visa part, thanks
visa version is usually hidden when the promotion appears
