Update 5/15/20: Deal has been extended until 6/14
Update 4/2/20: Has been extended through 5/14.
Mint Mobile is offering free unlimited data for all current & new customers through 4/14. The process works as follows:
I’m not a big fan that you’re charged and then refunded as there is always the possibility of something going wrong during that process. Some people will still have free accounts from the superbowl promotion (those need to be activated by March 19th and are eligible for this promotion)

I'm a big fan of Mint mobile. Really saves me so much just using their service.
One thing I'm not entirely clear is that if you signed up for Mint mobile after 4/14 if you'd still be eligible to receive free data. A friend of mine signed up for Mint's 3 month plan on 4/15 and was not able to get free data. I'll get in touch with them and find out if Mint mobile is letting to add extra data free of charge once their monthly allocated data is done.
When my 6 month’s recently renewed, they said I had to keep the six month plan in order to get the unlimited data add-ons. You can always check the data add on screen to confirm eligibility: if it says 3GB for $0, then you know you qualify.
FYI, they've changed the process so that it no longer charges and refunds–it simply adds on and doesn't touch your card. (They've added on two new eligibility rules, however–must have been a customer prior to today, April 14, and you become ineligible if you downgrade to a smaller data amount plan).

Extended to 6/14, @will
Thanks
My plan was till yesterday. Today morning I still can call, text, etc. When do they stop service? Maybe they don't stop service bc of virus? Maybe they will try to bill me later? There is no credit card information on my account.
So T-mobile stops unpaid prepaid service at midnight. Mint stopped at 7pm the next day.
Can we post referrals to Mint Mobile on this thread or can we get a different thread?
Is this slow unlimited data? I have Verizon and it's incredibly slow once you have used up your high-speed allotment, which I usually do in a week or less.
According to T&C, they can throttle to 64 kbps what would be REALLY slow. In practice I think they just de-prioritize your traffic, and still can get pretty usable speeds, depending on congestion of the cell.
It slows you down artificially once you are over the limit. I think it drops you to 3G. Not positive to what extent it is usable when this happens. Never happened to me.
You can purchase more data.
Just a quick DP:
3/27 - burned through monthly data and reloaded 3GB
3/27 - both $21 charge and $21 refund posted on Amex SCB
How do you know when you're close to the end of your data allotment? Do you get a text warning? Your phone or app makes it easy to tell?
Short answer: Yes
Longer answer: You can track data usage on the phone. It is built-in on Android devices. Probably on iPhone too. It is not necessarily 100% the same as the provider data, but it is close enough. On Android devices you can also set the day of the month when your billing cycle ends and you can set an alarm and a 'hard limit'. For example you could set a warning at say the 2GB mark and could stop block use of mobile data altogether at the 3 GB mark. Not that it makes sense if it does not cost more. Mint only slows you down if you reach the limit of your plan
One more benefit on the usage tracking on the phone is you can see what your data usage has been in the past few months, so you can decide which plan will work best for you.
For the provider (specifically for Mint Mobile): On the web site when you login to your account you can check how much data you have left. Click the '4G LTE BALANCE' button. Not sure about the mobile app. It is somewhere there, I think.
For Mint, text DATA to 6700. It will text you back your data usage.

Also, free talk, text, web for same period of time from Hello Mobile
Scratch that. Noone in their customer service is aware of this offer, even though you get the offer in pre-recorded form when calling their phone number
As a current Mint customer, I would be very wary of the pay-first model here. I have had terrible experiences with CS and with getting money back when they charged me incorrectly or screwed up my service. (I still use them because they are cheap, and this goes along with low-cost service, I get it... just wouldn't recommend expecting this to be smooth.)
I had to do this to add data on Monday, and it worked as described.
You have to wait until you're within 10% of running out of data, and then order more data, with a credit card. The next day, i saw both the charge and immediately the refund. No issues.
Our internet was out at home, and kids were starting remote school, terrible timing. I had them both tethered off two different mint-serviced phones. It got us through, no complaints. 5/5 would recommend!
I've been using Mint for close to three years now. And, no service I've recommend to my friends more than Mint. Really has saved me tons when I think how little I pay for them and their service is great where I'm at. My experience with their CS has been good too. I've only had to get in touch with them like twice.
+1. I also have Mint mobile. If you have good T-Mobile coverage in your area, Mint Mobile is work checking out. Great CS and coverage. If you pay for 1 year in advance, it will probably save you around $150-$300 per year compared to the big 4 carriers.
