The Fine Print

  • Requires $100 minimum deposit to open account.
  • All regular account opening procedures apply and are subject to approval.
  • Free checks include one box of standard duplicate checks.
  • Cash bonus of $160 requires account to have 12 debit card purchases with a combined total of at least $100 within 60 days of the account opening.
  • The bonus will be reported as interest earned on IRS Form 1099-INT and you are responsible for any applicable taxes.
  • The bonus will be credited to your new checking account within 6-8 weeks after debit card transactions are completed.
  • Account must be open to receive bonus.

Avoiding Fees

They offer a free basic checking account with no monthly fees to worry about (eStatements are required apparently). I wasn’t able to find a fee schedule so I am unsure on whether they charge an early account termination fee or not. According to this comment it’s $35 if closed within 90 days.

Our Verdict

No direct deposit is very nice, shame it has to be opened in branch but at least it’s a soft pull. I’ll add this to our best bank bonus list. As always share your own data points in the comments below.

  • The offer seems to have expired. No mention of it is found on the bank's website. Too bad, it is the only bank that offers a bonus in MO, where I reside.

  • I'm 120 miles from nearest location.There is a good bike trail on the way there. Do i need to live within 25 miles as some banks want you to be? Since i can only sign up in branch, i would not know till i showed up.

    • I recommend calling the branch you want to visit and ask a banker. 25 miles is not a normal requirement, but yeah, some banks do deny for that kind of distance.

  • You have to click on the Callaway Bank logo once your on the website. Anyway Callaway too faraway. Havaniceday.

  • This took a bit of effort - had to contact bank via chat twice to get bonus to post.

  • Callaway does allow mobile deposit of money orders, but your account has to be open for at least 30 days before they approve you for mobile deposit.

    I successfully deposited a WalMart money order a couple of days ago although I did have to take the picture twice to get their system to recognize it. There doesn't appear to be any hold on the funds either.

    Per chat rep, there is no hard limit on mobile deposits, either quantity or dollar amounts.

  • Just tried online. This is my first ever bank denial. I've opened 8 bank accounts in the last year. This was the verbiage, followed by ChexSystems' info.
