  • HomeTrust Bank is offering a bonus of $202, to receive this bonus you need to complete the following requirements:

    • Receive two qualified direct deposits of at least $250 each
    • Debit card must be ordered
  • You can also get $5 per month every month you complete at least 10 debit card transactions

The Fine Print

A $202 bonus will be credited to the new checking account within two weeks from second qualified direct deposit. Transactions must post and settle to qualify. Two (2) direct deposits must be an electronic deposit of your paycheck, pension or government benefits (such as Social Security) from your employer or the government of at least $250 each ($500 total).

  • This offer applies to new Everywhere Connect checking accounts only.

  • Offer is not available to customers who have closed an account within the past 90 days. If your account is closed within 180 days, an account closing fee equal to the bonus payment ($202) will apply.
  • Offer may be withdrawn at any time. Payments are subject to IRS tax reporting requirements.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

This account has a $10 monthly fee, this is waived if you do either of the following:

  • Five debit card transactions or
  • One recurring Direct Deposit

Early Account Termination Fee

If account is closed within 180 days of account opening the bonus has to be repaid

Our Verdict

Previously the bonus was $150 but you could open a free checking account, this is an extra $52 plus you can get the additional $5 bonus per month. Bit annoying to have to do the 5 debit card transactions/direct deposit to keep the account fee free but at least you can do 10 debit card transactions and also trigger the additional $5 monthly bonus. I do think this is worth doing, so it will be added to the best checking bonuses – just do the better bonuses first.

  • I received my bonus a day after hitting my second (real) DD though this was my first account with them.

  • Does anyone know if vending machine transactions qualify for the debit card transaction requirements?

  • Applied online on Jan 5th and got approved, said it would take 3 business days to receive debit card, etc. Still waiting for an official letter and card.

    • That's exactly it, it was the Trial Deposit error, I called and the attendee re-triggered it. I will have to wait until Tuesday do finish up the Trial Deposit.

  • FYI Doc on sign-up, no opportunity for credit or debit card for funding... just "from another institution" or "internal transfer".

    • I tried my zip code in NC, and it didn't work, either.

Well, I guess at least they don't make you apply if they have no intention of approving.

    • They denied me three times even when my mother in law live next to the bank. I used her address they wanted me to come to the bank. I in Nashville too

  • FYI this is not available for all of the Commonwealth of VA, just in their operating area.

    • Agreed. I got approved out of area, but a couple months later last year SO applied in VA and got denied, alerted via e-mail. No reason given. We replied, and they came back with this:

"Thank you for contacting the Customer Care Center at HomeTrust Bank with your question regarding your online account application.

At this time we are only accepting online account applications from individuals who reside within our regional footprint, as shown on our website.

If you have any further questions, please reply to this email or call the HomeTrust Bank Customer Care Center at (800) 627-1632, and a representative will be happy to assist."

  • Credit card funding: Yes, not sensitive?
Should be "Unknown" and does anybody know if Credit card funding possible?

  • Looks like they are still footprint sensitive (my application was denied last time because of this) based on the fineprint:

"Bonuses are paid after a manual account review to verify criteria including, but not limited to: direct deposit verification, debit card ordering, and physical address within the HomeTrust Bank market footprint."

      • I could've sworn I read something like 50 miles? But don't quote me on that. Besides, looks like they now filter you at the beginning of the application when you enter your zip code to see if you're eligible or not.

  • It appears this bonus is only for the Everywhere Connect account type; however, a word of caution for anyone that wishes to downgrade accounts in the future. I did the last HomeTrust promotion using the Simply Checking account type. This account has a $4 inactivity (assessed monthly) if there are no transactions for 3 months on the account and I've been having a hell of a time to get these fees refunded. Furthermore, you must close your account in branch or by sending a signed letter.
