The Offer
- Starion Bank is offering a checking bonus of up to $250 when you open a new checking account. Bonus is broken down as follows:
- $50 when you open an account with at least $500 in new money
- $200 when you receive a direct deposit OR a recurring automatic payment coming from the new account within 60 calendar days of account opening
The Fine Print
- This limited-time $250 bonus offer is available to new Starion Bank checking account customers (those without current Starion checking accounts) who open one of our Starion Bank checking accounts with a minimum opening deposit of $500 in new money (not currently on deposit with our bank).
- Account must be opened by 10/31/2021.
- $50 of the bonus will be credited to the new account within 10 calendar days of account opening when you meet the minimum deposit requirement at time of account opening.
- To qualify for the additional $200 bonus, you must establish a direct deposit into the new checking account OR a recurring automatic payment coming from the new checking account within 60 calendar days of account opening.
- The remaining $200 will be credited to the checking account within 90 calendar days of account opening, provided the account has met all requirements and is in good standing. Limit one $250 bonus per household. Subject to account approval and 1099 reporting. Fees may reduce earnings. Our Smart Plus account earns 0.01% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) on balances up to and including $25,000 and 0.02% APY over $25,000. APY is accurate as of 07/19/2021 and is subject to change without notice. Excludes HSAs and Teddy Roosevelt accounts.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
Classic checking account has a $2.95 monthly fee, this is waived if you meet any of the following requirements:
- Monthly Direct Deposit or Mobile Deposit• 10 debit card transactions per month• Deposit relationship of $5,000 or more
Early Account Termination Fee
I wasn’t able to find the fee schedule so I’m unsure if there is any early account termination fee or not.
Our Verdict
Better than the $150 bonus previously offered, especially as no direct deposit is required.

@will The Schedule of Charges says "Closed account charge - account closed if open less than 6 months or bank force closed" is $25
$200 paid on 12/27/21, opened 10/20/21.
Nice easy bonus, thanks!
Any info on how to easily meet the recurring automatic payment requirement?
Opened online, funded with ACH pull. Next day they send email that acoount can't be opened.
On second day they called and tell me that ACH is already made, and to reverse it I have to call my bank.
They will not help me to reverse ACH to supposedly unopened acoount.
I get the impression that all they want is to lure me into the branch, because sentence
"come to the branch" was repeated dozen times during conversation.
Instant approved, over 24 accounts opened this year
Funded $500 with Chase Sapphire Preferred (showing as pending)
no hard pull, but they are chex sensitive
How many in the last 12/24 months?
Got denied online app d/t not being able to verify my identity (i may have messed something up idk) so went in branch and opened, during the process the person noticed I had a handful of recent bank openings, and i could see it on his computer. He just said yeah don't open too many and then we moved on with the process. So maybe chex sensitive isnt accurate but I think they notice.
@will Opened account, in state. Funded with charge to Citi Premier. Cash advance limit was set to $100 and $500 charge is now pending.
@will they have locations in Wisconsin too
Let me add
Applied from OOS, took like 2 minutes (they did send separate verifications to my mobile and email, had to give both). At the end, I got this message:
Thanks

Ah too bad! But thanks for the DP.
Ditto!
Did you get a hard pull? A DP from 2019 said they pull Experian: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/fargo-nd-only-starion-bank-150-checking-bonus/#comment-799604
I haven’t, but since I applied on a Sunday afternoon of a holiday weekend I suppose it could come Tuesday
