Update 2/9/21: Account no longer offered.
Originally posted on 04/03/17. Reposting on 10/30/17 due to negative changes. Buffalo Savings Bank has sent out a letter stating a number of negative changes to the account:
- Maximum balance reduced to $15,000 (previously $35,000). Effective 12/15/17 for existing account holders
- They expect the account to be used for everyday expenses and reserve the right not to credit interest if they feel you are only trying to qualify for the rate
If you’re looking for a new savings account due to these changes, I’d start here.

Thanks to reader Kalf8483 for mentioning this bonus, this is their link. Feel free to share your link (once) in the comments. Note the referral bonus states it’s limited to Michigan, Indiana and Illinois – not sure if that is actually enforced or not. You can generate your own link here.
Avoiding Fees
This account has no monthly fees to worry about
Our Verdict
I like the fact that there is no monthly fees and also direct deposit isn’t required. In general these requirements are pretty easy to complete (here are some ideas on how to meet those debit card requirements). The downside is that they state they must be everyday transactions and reserve the right not to award the APY if they feel they aren’t every day transactions. The APY is higher than a basic high interest account, but not as good as most rewards checking accounts. The upside is that you also get the $50 Amazon gift card as well.
Much less useful due to the much smaller cap.

@DOC @Charles This offer should be marked as expired.....Look like new bank (TCU) does not offer high interest any more for the new checking accounts...
I don't see this offer on their site anymore.
Now that NWSB merged with TCU , got a call from TCU about the transition and the banker mentioned that 15 debit card transactions are waived till June 2021 but they will still be paying 3.25% upto 10k...Are you guys planning to keep the account with TCU ??
This info is outdated
What info?
Reached out to them for 1099 and here is their response ::
You will not be receiving a 1099 INT form from us this year. You have a Kasasa account which does earn interest, but that interest is not reportable due to the fact that you had to meet qualifications to earn it. Because of this, the money earned is actually a "reward" and you will not receive the 1099 INT form.
I received a 1099 INT from New Buffalo this year for my Kasasa account.
Do you also see the 1099 INT form online under statements ?
No I don't see it under Main Statements, Checking View Statements, or View History. I received the 1099 in the mail.
Venmo transactions no longer count for triggering the interest :/
For those who have this account ...beware they also changed the qualification period(see the new disclosure sent with the letter of changes effective as of 12/15/2017).
It says 27% instead of 2.27% on their website :)
Lol
Even the referral bonus is down to $25 Amazon GC, not $50 anymore....
Thanks, fixing.
Not happy about the change to 15k and still 12 debit purchases required.
