(Updated) Numerous Flavors Of The Capital One Shopping Portal

(Reposting 2/18/24 – updated and added some details below)

There are a number of different Capital One shopping portal options. We’ve mentioned them before, and just wanted to put out a dedicated post so we can easily link to for future references.

  1. (Our Review | Direct link) Capital One Shopping online portal which is a traditional shopping portal, similar to Rakuten and Topcashback. Note: this portal is entirely separate from the bank login. Anyone can create a dedicated Capital One Shopping login, even if they don’t have any banking products from Capital One.
  2. Capital One Shopping app is the app version of the online portal and shares the same account and password with the online portal. There are sometimes elevated offers on the app which don’t show on the regular portal website. A reader tells us of getting the increased cashback in the app after actually using the app, so that’s something to try if you aren’t getting good offers.
  3. Capital One browser extension Again, this is all part of the regular Capital One shopping portal, but with the Chrome extension there are often higher offers and promo codes that pop-up.
    • The extension will often notice which products interest you and send you targeted email offers for increased rewards on that product or that online retailer; click through the link in the email to get the increased cashback rate.
    • You can also go to the homepage of Capital One Shopping and see Your Personalized Deals which are often higher.
    • Similarly, you can go to the ‘Filters’ tab on the top-right of the homepage and find special offers. These offers often follow your searches, they can be quite valuable. Even when they show an offer for a specific product, it seems to work for the entire retailer – if you click through that specific link which shows the offer.
  4. (Our Review) Capital One Offers are offers found on Capital One cards within your bank/card login, similar to Chase Offers and Bank Amerideals. These have the advantage of earning actual cashback (versus the Capital One portal which needs to be redeemed as a gift card). There is a max $1,000 cashback per 3 billing cycles which can be earned with the login Offers (versus the portal which has no limit). They may (or may not) officially require that you pay with a Capital One credit card, but it usually tracks fine even if you don’t. The main thing required is the click-through like a shopping portal. You do need to have a Capital One card or account login to get access to these offers.
  5. (Our Review | Direct link) Capital One Spring are special offers for businesses. Anyone can sign up.

  • @6 Capital One Offers now lets you pick which account to apply the credit too, including checking and savings accounts. They also now show you how much cashback you're getting after the offer tracks instead of after you get the credit.

    • Are you saing Capital One Shopping allows you to redeem to checking and savings accounts? I thought only giftcards were an option. please explain

      • @guest_1626331 No, Capital One Offers allows it. Capital One Shopping is different, and only allows gift card redemptions, as explained in the post.

    • Of course having said that, I have almost $50 in cashback that should be coming to my Capital One savings account. The status went to 'Completed' about a week ago and it still hasn't shown up...

  • Capital One Shopping now requires waiting 90 days before making a missing cashback claim. The time frame had previously been 30 days. Considering that many other portals allow missing cashback claims after 7 days, this is a disappointing development.

  • Capital One Shopping has the slowest tracking times for me and poor redemption options. Probably my least favorite portal to use.

  • The terms for Capital One Offers no longer require that you use a Capital One card -- only that you have a Capital One login of some kind. However, as I recently found out, if a purchase does not track, and you used a non-C1 credit card, C1 will refuse to file a missing cash back claim or do any investigation -- you are out of luck. On the other hand, if you did use a C1 card and they can see that the purchase has not been returned, they will frequently just issue a courtesy credit right away.

I have filed a CFPB complaint about this differential treatment, since it is not disclosed in the terms -- we'll see what happens. But, for the moment, unless you have a compelling reason not to, save yourself some hassle and use a Capital One card.

    • I think this is CSR dependent. I've had to be very persistent but over the course of about 4 calls this year got my credits issued for puchases made last Oct and Nov with non-C1 card. Be sure you are talking to the "Exclusive Products Servicing" Department.

      • Yes, I spoke to that department. Escalated to a supervisor, and got a (very) firm refusal. In view of the terms, and my baseline rule that there is no point arguing with people firmly convinced of the correctness of their obviously incorrect position, I decided to move on to the CFPB and the Capital One Customer Advocacy Office. @guest_1800124

  • Make sure you keep your Capital One Shopping separate from your Capital One credit card/banking accounts. (Separate emails, phone number, address if possible.)

They may send 1099s for your Capital One Shopping earnings.

  • What a headache. I canceled my capital one shopping account after cashing out my bonus from last year.

  • Do you need to have a capital one credit card login to use the capital one shopping portal or you can create a login without being a capital one cardholder?

    • No need to have a Capital One credit card or banking account to use Capital One Shopping.

  • I signed up with them once and installed their plugin. Then one day I got an email from them saying "we saw you were shopping at (so-and-so) site and maybe you want to go back and make a purchase" (or maybe suggesting another site). I had not gone through their plugin to visit said site I immediately uninstalled the extension and sent them a nasty email. They responded that many of their customers appreciated such emails.

I am sure that I am snooped on all the time but did not appreciate their being so obvious about it.

  • Same question as san in feb 2023
Does CapitalOne shopping has any referral bonus?
