Our Verdict
Much better than the previous $250 bonus. I don’t really see any reason why you would do the $250 bonus as the requirements are the same and it’s easy to keep the other account fee free. I will add this to the list of the best bank account bonuses by clicking here.

Did anyone receive tax forms from this bonus?
Yes.
anyone had any more luck closing your account w/o going in branch? I might try cfpb...
I was able to close it with a secure message. they asked for account name, account number and my address I think. I can't log into my account anymore since they closed it.
same. if we can sign up online we should be able to close online.
Hey Everyone! Did any of you got a 1099 from NYCB/ Flagstar for last year's bonus? I closed my account and can't find out. Calling them has been a pain
Yes, I received it by snail mail.
Thanks Eric. I assume it was $350 plus some change as interest, correct?
Correct.
How are people closing their accounts if they don’t live by a branch?
When I called them, they said both downgrades and closures must be in the branch only.
I called them and they said you could send a notarized letter requesting to close with your acc number, SSN, and ID
There is no way, the nearest branch is 2 hours from me one way
Did you end up going in branch or they let you close another way?
When downgrading to the no fee account, does any one know the exact name of the account type?
I see a flat fee on all of them, maybe I'm looking at an outdated document.
Nvm, it's called "Ready Checking". Had to downgrade in branch.
DP

3/20 Promotion deposited
Bonus is credited to me on the 95th day despite my free checking account converted to basic checking with $2.00 flat fees. Just wanna you to be aware of e-statement is opt in after account opened.
Called to close the account. Was told to go in branch.
One of the most miserable branches I've been to. No music playing. No one chatting. Female tellers with blank stares, their faces animating only once they saw a young child.
After they closed my account I stepped outside and felt like I didn't want to go back, like ever.
Not much to smile about or cause for frivolity given the bank's financial straits. A little compassion would be nice.
Tried closing account using SM the "close account request" subject but it didn't work, told to go in branch...
Thank you for choosing Flagstar for all of your banking needs. We are in receipt of your inquiry.
For your protection, we cannot close this account by an e-mail request. The opening of this account required signed copies of account agreements.
Therefore, a signature is required to close the account. Please contact your local branch for further information pertaining to how you can close your account.
For information specific to your branch such as the telephone number, address, hours, directions, or closures, please visit our Branch Locator found on our homepage to the left of the login button.
What garbage. Did you try calling?
I just called to close and was told to go to a branch.
Is it ok to downgrade the account to a no-fee account? The only fear is of collapsing the bank and losing the $500 balance that I keep for waiving the monthly maintenance fees.
If you received the bonus, you are free to downgrade. I was forced to go in-branch to do so though.
Yup, Even I was asked the same I have a plan to visit the branch today. Let's see. Thanks.
