The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Receive a sign up bonus of $250 when you open a Simple+ or Select checking account with Astoria bank and complete the following requirements:
    • Maintain the required balances to keep the accounts fee free (Simple+ requires $2,500+ in the account or $10,000+ across all Astoria accounts and Select requires $25,00+ across all Astoria accounts)
    • Complete one of the following during three consecutive months:
      • Receive direct deposits of $250 or more
      • Make three online bill payments of $25 or more each
  • In addition to this it’s possible to get another $50 for activating direct deposit. According to these comments this may no longer be possible.

The Fine Print

  • Limit of one bonus per customer
  • Bill pays or direct deposits must all be completed within 4 months of account opening
  • Bonus will be posted within 30 business days of the requirements being met
  • A direct deposit is considered a recurring, pre-authorized deposit credited to the customer’s checking account via the Automated Clearing House (ACH). One-time ACH credits such as tax refunds, payments/transfers from other bank accounts, etc. do not qualify
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

The simple+ account comes with a monthly fee of $10, this is waived if you keep an average monthly balance of $2,500 which is required for the bonus anyway.

The Select has a monthly fee of $15 which is waived if you have at least $25,000 across all your Astoria accounts.

There is no mention of any early account termination fee on their fee schedule page. If your account is inactive for 90 days or more, you’ll be charged a $10 inactivity fee.

Our Verdict

This is a pretty good bonus and was offered last year as well, if I lived in NY then I would definitely complete this deal. Here is what I’d do:

  • Open a new Simple+ account
  • Add a total of $2,725 in funds to meet the minimum balance requirements, this would also keep the account fee free and give me enough money to do the three bill pays per month for three months (you can only fund $2,500 at account set up, so you’ll need to fund again afterwards, thanks to Nick for letting me know this)
  • Complete three bill pays per month for three consecutive months, making sure they are all at least $25 each (you could just make small payments on your credit card or other bill) (+$250)
  • Wait six months to avoid any possible early account termination fee
  • Withdraw all funds including bonus to regular checking account
  • Close account

If you have any experience with this bonus, then please share it in the comments. We’ve add this to our Best Bank Bonus page for regional areas. Also, check out this Bank Bonus Resource page for lots of useful info about opening bank accounts.

  • Received $250 bonus on 12/1/16 as "INTEREST CREDIT CASH BONUS NHA 2016".

Made over three $25+ bill pays a month to three different cards.

Every two weeks I'd use Stripe to move $250+ into my account, labeled as direct deposit.

    Account opened in early September.

  • I wasn't able to do this one as I got too many inquiries at that time. Checked again today, bonus reduced to $50 now, so unlikely they will have $200 - $300 in the future.

  • 08/18/2016 ach $2500
    8/19 deposit $250

3 bill pays a month $25 x 3 each to chase credit card

    Received bonus $250 10/13

    Thanks!!!

  • Opened my account Aug 1st 2500 dollars. Did three bill pay for each month aug, sept, oct. Last bill pay oct 6th, received bonus oct 13th. This bank is not set up for ach transfers so i am closing as soon as possible !!

  • Waste of time... Automatically received direct deposit bonus $50 because that's how I was fulfilling requirements. Today asked about where $250 bonus is and was told I can't get it because I already received a bonus.

  • LOL, the craziest/funniest bank ever!
Me, my sister, and my brother tried to open account ONLINE - all were denied! My sister opened 2 accounts in 4 months with other banks, me same thing, and my brother. None of us have any negative and unpaid bills ever. We still waiting for their letter of explanation! They run ChexSystem they mentioned: No evidence of Asset Ownership, DDA closure Payment History, DDA Closure(s), Unique FI DDA Inquiry History. We have no idea what they are talking about, never seen such a thing in our lives. We checked our Credit Reports 8 months ago. We will see!

      • "ChexSystems is classified as a consumer credit reporting agency" we ordered! Still waiting! We are sure nothing will be there! Because three different persons cannot have the same issues as Astoria bank mentioned!

  • Pull for Bank of America CC counts as bill pay, but pull for Chase CC doesn't count. No idea why and at the end of the day I couldn't get the bonus.

Had to mail a letter to close the account, and waiting for the check now.

    • Wait, so you didn't get the bonus bc you used bill pay to pay Chase CCs? And met all other requirements? Did you escalate and ask for the bonus bc you clearly did the bill pays to a Chase CC?

  • Opened a checking account in local Branch on last day of June Promo and funded with $2500.00.

Made 3 Direct Bill pay, each over $25.00 every month beginning in May, June and July.

$250.00 BONUS promptly posted today, 10 days after I fulfilled my direct bill obligation.

Astoria Bank is a community bank with courteous service. I will continue to bank here.
