Our Verdict

Make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate at office supply stores. You might be able to get an additional 7% cash back at Yelp. We wrote about this ‘Happy’ gift card line in a dedicated post, as well as which stores each card works at.

  • Is the OD/OM one per household limit hardcoded in some way even if you don't give them a rewards number?

  • Anyone bought 3rd party gc with these at Home Depot lately? It used to work great but I’ve been seeing reports it’s become more YMMV lately...

      • I just used my $100 card tonight at self checkout for 2 $50 Arco gift cards. The cashier needed to do some sort of override but never asked to see my card, so no issues.

        • @guest_745690 At which Home Depot location were you able to find Arco gift cards? I went to two HDs in Southern California today, and they had no gas cards or any other cards that I would want. (Going forward, I guess I will go back to the Happy Lady/BBB route, but, for the moment, I have a bunch of Happy Guys I need to liquidate.)

          • I've literally never gone into a Home Depot and not found Arco gift cards. I live in San Diego.

          • @guest_745690 Lucky you! I guess I will check HDs in southern Orange County next time I am there; maybe they have the same stock as the San Diego area.

          • @guest_746326 I take that back, just got an email this afternoon showing $6.30 cash back! Woohoo! Did you get your confirmation email?

          • @guest_745690 when did you make the purchase? I just made the purchase today. So will have to wait and see. How many days did it take for the confirmation email? Also, can you cash out the $6.30 immediately?

          • @guest_746326 I made my purchase on the 7th and got my cashback today, the 10th, so 3 days.

Yelp Cash Back doesn't work immediately. They pay you once a month on the 18th following the month you earn in. So I'll get this cashback May 18th.

          • @guest_745690 I stand corrected on my previous comment. I made the purchase today evening around 4:30 PM. I looked at the app now and it shows $6.30 as pending with a credit date of 5/18/2019.

        • Are we supposed to do anything different when pay using these Happy Guy cards to buy 3rd party GCs at Home Depot? Or is just going to be the same like paying using a regular credit card?

    • Yes. Dont ask the cashier though. Its to be run as a credit - so do just that. Not however that is does not auto-drain - so you need to have have more funds on a single Happy card than the visa GC value + fee OR ask tell the cashier that you are splitting payment on more than one card. Depending on which cashier this could lead to problems....or not.

      • My local BBBs (northern VA) no longer allow buying 3rd party gift card using happy lady card. They accepted it just a few months ago.

  • I've tried to use the Happy Guy cards at Home Depot and it's a huge hassle. No one knew how to use them and running as credit didn't work at all. When I called the issuing company, they said $50 was actually deducted from the card. I'm still trying to get it back. I was able to use another card for $200 on HomeDepot.com, though you can only use one card online and it has to cover the entire purchase price (can't combine with another payment method),

I got the cards during a Vons offer, which earned 6% (Cash back on my AmEx Cash card and $30 in fuel points. Despite that, still not worth the huge hassle to redeem.

    • Just wanted to add my $0.02. I used the Happy Guy cards a few times at Home Depot and only had a minor issue one time, which was rectified. If you have merchant GC's, do small transactions at self checkout... worked for me!

      • Here’s my experience at HD:

5 times I’ve grabbed $200 worth of eBay GC’s and gone to an actual checkout lane. They total it out I swipe the Happy Guy card which has a $200 balance and the receipt prints. Super Easy

        4 times at Self Checkout:

Rings up and asks cashier for verification they press okay and I swipe the card no issues.

Once at Register: I was in a sketchy area buying just a $50 GC was told they need to match ID to CC. I pulled out my ID and the Happy Guy Card. They asked if it was a GC because if it was it would decline. I advised it was a Visa GC just a new brand of them and that they even sold them in their store at their GC section.

She said we can try it but I’m not sure if it’ll work. It worked no issues, she was surprised and I told her they’re new and she should buy one!

So overall is pretty easy I don’t know why any of you are having issues. You should grab the GC’s at HD proceed to a register, get rung up then swipe the Happy Guy Visa GC as payment. It is an actual credit card the same as if you bought one displaying the Visa or MC logo.

  • Do I have to shop at the Office depot location that I click "claim the offer". I cannot find my favorite location on the list. When I clicked "claim the offer", it just opened another window for that store??? It did not give me any confirmation about the cashback. So confusing.

    • No, these cards only work at the merchants listed on the front of the card purchased. The post has a link to the various cards and merchants.

      • If you oook at previous posts people were able to use these at wal marts, and other stores but listed on the gc.

        • I've only seen posts like that for everywhere cards (i.e. fuel everywhere cards use at Costco), but obviously I haven't seen every post :)

          • Happy Lady is known to work at Buy Buy Baby (subsidiary of Bed Bath & Beyond). I'll bite for $10 off $100 Happy Guy, but I'm still using the others (Cheesecake Factory, Jamba Juice, Panera Bread, etc.) from when the sales were 15% and 20% off.

          • I did earlier. The only one I saw that says it works at Walmart says that Dining Everywhere worked at Walmart. These are Happy Gift Cards, not Everywhere ones. But hey, if you can get them to work, great. Happy Gift cards seem to really only work well when buying gift cards with them IME (like Happy Guy to buy a 3rd party at Home Depot or Happy Lady to buy a 3rd party at Bed Bath and Beyond).

          • I was just thinking about getting the one for cheesecake. Do you know if there’s any issues with using it there??

          • Used a $25 one in the restaurant last November to buy a gift card to get the free slices. No issue other than telling the cashier to run as credit when she looked at it oddly.
