The Offer

A reader saw the following deal at Office Depot:

  • Get $10 off a $50 Happy gift card

Update: you need to buy two Happy cards to get the $10 discount. Best deal is to buy two $25 Happy cards which will trigger the $10 discount.

We wrote about this ‘Happy’ gift card line in a dedicated post, as well as which stores each card works at.

The Fine Print

  • Expires 10/13/18

Our Verdict

There are similar deals for 16.6% off Happy gift cards online at Giftcardmall.com and 10-15% off Happy gift cards at Safeway. This 20% discount + 5x INK seems like the best deal. Not sure if you can get the discount on multiple cards in a single transaction or if you’ll have to break up the transactions.

I assume this deal is available at all Office Depot/Max locations, but have only heard one data point so far. Let us know if you see or don’t see this in your local store.

  • Bought 2x $25 for $40 at Office Depot on Monday. Used those Happy Cards at Home Depot for $50 gift card. Swipe cards as normal credit card. Southern CA.

  • Can confirm like a few others, single $50 for $40 works. Separate transactions can be troublesome unless you have a good cashier who doesn't care or knows you. In Louisiana here

  • At my Office Max, despite no signage indicating there was a gift card deal, the Happy gift cards were ringing up $10 off $50. I purchased one card and paid $40. I went back and attempted to purchase two more, but they only rang up at $45 each. So, I put one back and just went with one card for $40. It appears tonight that I could buy only two per rewards account. The discount didn't apply until I gave my rewards number.

    • Someone on FT said they didn't need to enter their phone number to get the discount. (Maybe the discount will show up near the end of the process, when they total the amount.)

    • Or maybe it means maximum $10 discount per transaction. Did you try a 3rd transaction? (I wanted to try a 3rd but the cashier wouldn't let me.)

      • No, I didn't try a third. Tonight, I went back and gave 2 different rewards accounts by mistake. I'm still buying $50 at a time for $40. Next time, I'll try three. It sure would be helpful if it was just a straight 20% off the $500. I used mine at HD tonight to buy Disney GC's. I used their self-checkout without a problem. I did separate transactions for each gift cards without any issues.

  • Has anyone tried to buy any of the cards that list Home Depot or Bed Bath & Beyond and then use the card to buy gift cards off the racks at those stores? I’m assuming that this would work since these are basically Visa gift cards. I don’t think you’d find a better deal than 20% off Disney or gas gift cards and earn 5X Ultimate Rewards at the same time. Anybody know of any other listed merchants with a gift card rack?

  • The challenge here is trying to scale this offer considering the time involved in each $50 Happy GC purchase. Say one purchases 20 x $50 Happy GCs. Many clerks are not going to allow 20 consecutive transactions and if they do, there could be issues trying to repeat the 20+ transactions again the next day.

      • This is really better suited for personal purchase discounts at stores like HD, BBB, etc. IMAO it is better not to try to scale this offer and burn good store/clerk relationships when there exist much better offers in the future that are much easier to scale.

        • I agree. That is why I was wondering which store you would want $1000 of credit for. Any with BB&B as an option is a good choice as you can probably get away with buying a $50 merchant gc with it in the worst case. I guess for HD that would work also as last time I was there they had a lot of 3rd party gc.

      • did u look at the logos on the happy packages? plenty to be excited about if u can scale and cashiers allow GC to GC which mine def do not. esp not for high vol.

        • I'm assuming you mean at BB&B, correct? If so, whenever I have used more than 1 credit card (ie for Amex Offers promos) the cashier asks to see the card.

I guess someone could get lucky and have a cashier not ask but that would be quite a risk.

          • exactly. its all about what you can get away with in ur region and plenty people still getaway with MO at WM. lucky shits.

    • I'm in Houston, it shows $10 off when you buy $50 or more on 2 cards, limit one per household. looks like $10 off on total $100 for me. Cannot test it since all happy cards had been sold out.

  • $10 off $50 is also available at Giant Food Stores this week. Must spend $10 on groceries to receive the discount. Worked for me 10/7.

    • The offer you mentioned has to be added via Digital Coupons on the website. At least that's how it is for Stop & Shop by me.

It is $10 off $10 of grocery with a $50 Happy Gift Card purchase. There are several different ones (Guy, Student, etc.).

  • asked this at the other happy thread:

    1) anyone get hacked yet? these cards are 100% exposed. all cc numbers, exp date and cvv code are all clearly shown with no cover and easily copied.

    2) any consistent success with GC to GC at HD or BBB? i assume its YMMV.

    • Some people on the disboards.com have said they've been using the Happy cards to purchase Disney gift cards at BBB and HD. The card is suppose to be processed as credit. YMMV

      • Can confirm this worked - processed as credit (used a $50 Happy for $50 Disney). Obviously, if you were to do like 5-6 swipes, you might need a friendly CSR

    • +1. You wonder what Metabank is thinking when they design these cards??? Do they understand the level of fraud issues these days???

      • exactly. already bad enough with mastercard debits drained at OD and now they have exposed visa debits? yea rite. no time for that BS. but i guess if u liquidate ASAP then u may beat the criminals.

      • yea. np. i went to safeway thinking to buy a few thousand. then i looked at the packaging. totally exposed. all credit card details clearly shown. not even covered up. these arent GC like panera bread or nordstrom. they are visa debits.

however, i guess you could liquidate asap and avoid being drained out. easy to do for only one GC. not for many.

  • Purchased a $50 Happy Gift Card today for $40 at my Office Max in VA. It appears it’s nationwide.
