Our Verdict

I don’t think this one is being publicly advertised, but you should see the notice by the gift card rack in-store. If anyone has an image, please share and I’ll add it in.

Use your Ink Cash/Plus card for 5x points or use another card that has a bonus. You can also link your card to Dosh for 2% back, up to $10 per day; and the Payce app has Office Depot/Max too. These apps might not work for gift card purchases.

  • Question from a GC rookie. Will Chase flag my account if I buy 10 of these this week from OD? Is there any data on being flagged for buying too many GC?

    • I bought 10 in one day at one store.. all separate transactions. Call to notify of a large purchase first.

  • Went to my local OD/OM store and found none of the $200 MCGC or even $200 VGC on the rack. The section had about the same amount of each denomination as it did for the last sale (lots of $25s and $50s). Was told by a store associate that the gift card section is restocked about every 2 to 3 months. I just won't bother to go there as much in the future to save me from a wasted trip. Off to Staples.

    • try the diningeverywhere (or gaseverywhere, etc.). Those have lower fees ($4.95) and at least for me work just the same as a generic $200 MCGC when cashing out for a money order. they also are less likely to get cleaned out

      • I thought the Everywhere cards didn't always work, like gas didn't work for Walmart, but fashion did. Thanks for reminding me, maybe I can buy those for the next Visa sale. Now, if only they have those in stock.

      • @Peter The * everywhere cards are Visa, not MasterCard. Are you saying this promo works on Everywhere Visa GCs too?

  • Stack with DOSH for 2% cash back, up to $10 per day. Double-stack with Payce for an extra $5 cash back per month.

  • Hmmm, that's a lot of visits to buy a $200 visa gift card. Unlike the old $15 off $300+ promo, this might not be worthwhile.

    • Best way to take advantage of this with a 5x/5% card is to get two $200 cards. Overall profit of $16.30.

        • Millennial, I think of it as return on effort and that’s different for everyone. I would buy at least the $200 card since it is the same effort to buy and liquidate as one $100 one. And the profit (assuming UR points are only valued at 1 cent which is too low I think) is $12 for a $200 card (assume $1 for the MO), but only $8 for a $100 one . ROI means nothing to me since I buy and liquidate the same day.
But for me to buy an additional $200 card without the promo means only $2 profit to buy and liquidate that card. Not worth the effort or risk for $2. But to each their own.

      • @raekwon, makes no sense to buy two $200 cards.. Buy one $200 card make $13 profit with 5% card (rounding), only get an incremental profit of $3 on the next card per normal without the promotion.

        • @guest_1037528 Buying one more card per trip to get an extra $3 profit makes all the sense in the world to me. Zero extra effort. (I'm trying to maximize profit per trip to the store, not per card.)

          • @raekwon, then why only two using that logic? You get another incremental $3 for the next 100 cards. You don’t max by buying two even with your logic. You should buy as many as you can afford and is worth liquidating for a poultry $3 incremental profit (really less after paying for MO).

          • @guest_1037528 After $400 (in my experience/region, anyway), they have to call in to pre-authorize the full amount of your purchase. $400 is the sweet spot for least hassle/most profit. **shrug**

          • Most of us have a 2% cashback card for all purchases beside the 5% Chase Ink. The second $200 will earn you incremental $3 but then you lose the $4 earned by using your regular 2% card to make regular purchases on the second $200.

          • Buy them separately if they let you. Frankly I won't be participating in this deal due to my unwanted hassle of dealing with MCGC. Always too much room for error with them.

        • @guest_1037506 The fee is $6.95 on $200 cards, so you'll end up paying $403.90 for two ($413.90 minus the $10 promotion). 5% cashback on $403.90 is $20.20. Subtract $3.90 from that (because you took a loss of $3.90 making the original payment) and you get $16.30.

          • You're still paying $1.95 fee per card. At that rate you might as well go to Staples and buy 5.

          • @guest_1037612 That's fair. It'd be better if it was Visa instead of MC ($4.95 fee on *Everywhere cards instead of $6.95).
