Office Depot/Max Limits Gift Card Deal to exclude Gap, Gamestop, Darden & Domino’s

Office Depot/Max have updated their weekly ad to limit the $20 off $100 gift card deal to only four brands: Brinker, Ruby Tuesday, Michael’s, and Catherine’s. Previously eligible brands which are no longer eligible are: Gap brands, Gamestop, Darden brands, and Domino’s. This change is hard-coded at the register not to discount the excluded brands.

You can see a picture of the original ad here, and below is a picture of the ad as it shows now (pg. 22):

It’s surprising they’d change a deal in middle – even to change the ad – when most of these cards were probably sold out already. Office Depot/Max has been known to change deals mid-period before, this just brings home the point that with OM/OD deals you have hit them early.

Yes, I used 50/10 AMEX offer on each of my AMEX cards – so $10 + $20 on every $100 (30%). No fee to convert GS GC into Amazon GC (1:1). I am in western new york.

I bought my first batch of GS GCs and went straight to GS to buy Amazon GCs, making it 30% discount on Amazon, where we shop daily. Then had my wife go and complete the rest of our AMEX to purchase GS cards just before that changed. Now have 2.5K in Amazon GCs with 30% discount. Wow, great deal as I value Amazon $ almost as cash. Thanks Doc!

Dmitry, which metropolitan area are you in? I thought about getting these GCs but chickened out, as I was afraid my GS would not allow conversion to Amazon. Curious as to where you were able to do this.

Classic exaggerator. Even with a 5% business card, you are only saving 24%. Then you lose 5% purchasing on Amazon with a GC instead of a CC. Your net gain is 20% or maybe up to 23 if you have an Ink with points.

He was using the amex offers. Please don’t denigrate people just because you don’t know what they’re talking about. Instead, you can ask for clarification.

Please explain “lose 5% purchasing on amazon with a GC…?”

someone at OD should lose their job over this.
who starts a gc promo like this without knowing which gc’s are sought after ???
think about it. You are in charge of gc sales and don’t know that everyone wants 20% off their Nintendo Switch console ? It’s 2 + 2, very simple.

i’ve had mgrs at different stores look at me like I’m trying to rob them too, just ridiculous. No guys, my cc will be paid off in days….unlike all of yours.
On top of it, the whole 1 gc per day per person…..huh ? Come on guys, it’s 2017, we’re all used to buying massive quantities when we want, get with the program.

OD will be out of business before Staples, that’s a good bet I think.

Yeah I stopped bothering with the only Office Max in my area after they stopped allowing more than 1 transaction per day per customer.

I could never find anything to buy at Office Max other than gift cards anyway. Just overpriced junk. At least Staples has some decent products, 110% price match, better in-store rewards.

I buy cases of water every week or 2 at my local Staples. Good way to use up Staples Rewards. I like Poland Spring and Office Max only sells some junk local/store brand.

Is it still possible to go to Gamestop and use your Gamestop GC to buy an Amazon GC? I thought that was stopped more than a year ago.

I’m hard pressed to come up with a scenario where this sale would be hurting OD/OM enough to pull the sale. The Visa GC card deal maybe, but this? It always seems like amateur hour at this retailer.

YMMV on store. People buying up GameStop to buy new game consoles at the moment, 20% discount on those is very good.

I think GameStop has been applying POS updates/blocks to certain gift cards on a rolling/market basis. My market (Philadelphia metro) worked until a few months ago, then it became hard-coded to not accept GameStop gift card for Amazon gc or Amazon Cash reloads.

I’d heard of other markets being blocked way back. My market had been blocking gas cards for a long time before this change.

Funny… I went in yesterday, and got $100 in Gap cards with $20 just fine. Did the same today, and the $20 wasn’t applied at the register, and I pointed to the ad right next to he register, and a manager discounted the $20. Looks like neither of us had word of the policy change when I went in there.

The manager at my usual store mentioned that the Gamestop card had been in huge demand and they ran out within the first half hour of store opening on sunday…he said corporate had reported similar situations all over the country and stores were being inundated with call checking if in stock….

Yeah, Gamestop was the only card on the original list with resale value over 80%. I’m sure it will drop quickly with this flood of new supply.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Officemax/Depot have another promotion some time ago where they changed the terms?

They ended their VGC deal early last year – after like 2 or 3 days

Yeah, and they actually did it twice. Both were in April this year (2017). The 14-day promotion was ended middle of first week. Following’s week 7-day promotion lasted until something like Friday.

My wife attempted to buy a Darden restaurant card today and the $20 credit didn’t ring up so this must be why. Mine had a few hours before. They ended up giving her $20 in cash.

Oh wow. Pretty much limited it to the gift cards very few people probably buy and use.

Well that’s kind of fits a purpose of promotions: discounting things that’s otherwise harder to sell. So it’s understandable I guess.
