The Fine Print

  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Interest Plus Checking ($150 Bonus)

This account has a $10 monthly fee. This is waived if you do any of the following:

  • Maintain an average balance of $2,500.00 or more per statement cycle
  • Combined balances of at least $5,000 of Peoples Bank savings or money market accounts
  • Have an active related enrolled secured consumer loan

Premier Checking ($300 Bonus)

This account has a $15 monthly fee. This is waived if you have combined balances of $25,000 of Peoples Bank checking, savings, CD or money market accounts or Peoples Investment Services accounts

Early Account Termination Fee

I wasn’t able to find a fee schedule so I’m unsure if there is any early account termination fee or not.

Our Verdict

Need to know if this is a hard or soft pull to open. The requirements for each bonus are the same but the premier checking account is much more difficult to keep fee free. If it turns out to be a soft pull then the $150 bonus should be worth doing as it’s relatively easy to keep the account fee free with the $2,500 average balance. The $300 bonus would require a $25,000 balance and remember the account needs to be kept open for six months so probably not worth it.

  • anyone made account during this promo? It looks like incoming transactions are fine, but Peoples bank is stopping any outgoing transaction....disabling (giving error) the outbound transaction initiated from People bank or even rejecting the pull initiated by another bank. Called Customer Service, they could not find any problem.... strange !! So I can out money in, but can not take it out.....I have not received my debit card yet too!

  • Peoples bank is blocking the withdrawal during the verification initiated by the other banks. As a result, links for ACH push to peoples bank from external banks are getting cancelled/disabled.

  • There's definitely an early termination fee. I've dealt with Peoples Bank in the past. Well-run and growing regional bank out of Marietta, Ohio, that still has a ways to go before they can hang with the big boys.

  • Seems like too much work for the $150 and too much money tied up for the $300 lol. Still appreciate the post though. Thanks DoC!

  • It could make sense to do the larger bonus and just pay the monthly fee if you are a min/maxer that's planning on doing real direct deposits / don't mind some risk and your marginal fed&state tax rate is less than 40%.

    $15 monthly fee * 6 months = $90 in fees
    ($300 bonus - $150 bonus) * 40% marginal fed&state tax rate = $60 in additional taxes
Total extra expenses = $150 = Total extra bonus

    • like it. $50 bonus/month-$15 fee/month=$35 gain/month up to 6 months. (total $210 after 6 months vs $150 bonus). Good if there is no early termination fee (after 6 months), bad if there is ETF.
