Plastiq reached out to let us know that they started again allowing payments with an Amex card. For the past couple of weeks it hasn’t been working, but it’s now been restored.
As before, there are still more restrictions with Amex than others, for example, you can’t pay a mortgage with an Amex card. It seems they broadened the restricted payees a bit too. They updated the terms (4.1C) to indicate the following:
For Recipients in the United States, the use of American Express cards is permitted for the following industries: Government, Utilities, Education, Residential Rent and Club Fees and Memberships.
Check this Frequentmiler post for a handy chart of what works and what doesn’t now.

Apparently my bank is small enough that sending my mortgage payment through Plastiq doesn't raise any red flags to use AMEX or Visa. Too bad we're planning on moving next summer...
I have a theory, and it's just that, a theory, that the AMEX freeze on Plastiq might "fix" the loophole last year where the small business promotion was showing Plastiq as a small business. I'm hoping AMEX does the same promotion they did last year where you earned an additional point at small businesses from Black Friday through the end of the year.
Nevermind, they canceled my scheduled mortgage ("loan") payment yesterday, just a few days before it was due. My AmEx refunded and the fee got back on the card :(
Seems to be working for me too. Submitted my mortgage payment using AmEx and it went through (keeping fingers crossed)!
I have made car payments with Amex for the last three months. Has that changed?
I can no longer make car payments to either Hyundai or Kia with my account. Looks like I am going to prepay my utilities for a few hundred dollars instead.
No car payment I’m guessing?
Any recommendations for paying a mortgage with an Amex? Looks like all the avenues have dried up.
It's expressly against American Express's merchant agreement to pay mortgages.
Such a bummer that no mortgage through Amex and Visa. Booooooooooo
Phew......there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
Some payments that were denied changed to accepted after slightly altering some of these fields: Name, phone, and type. One only had to change the type to other category.
And some were still denied:
This is an update regarding transactions on Plastiq. I've seen a lot of inquiries lately as to which cards we can accept for which transactions. I'd like to clarify this by outlining which industries/payments are supported:
American Express: Government, Utilities, Education, Residential Rent, and Club Fees & Memberships are the only supported industries
Discover: All industries are supported
MasterCard: All industries are supported
Visa: All industries are supported (with the exception of mortgage payments)
Small win on a rough day given the USPS news..
