Our Verdict

Best case scenario you’re saving $5, but having to deal with unloading a $50 Visa gift card. Personally I think these types of deals are not worth doing but I guess if you shop at Publix anyway it might be worth it. As always make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases, that includes the Chase Freedom this quarter.

  • My Publix in Tampa Bay is offering this deal for Visa, MasterCard, Kohl's, and a handful of Happy cards.

  • Discover It has 5% back at grocery stores this quarter. I'm not seeing this at my Tampa Bay location, but we did have a gas card deal last weekend.

    • I pulled up the direct link in store yesterday (1/16/20) and it went to a gas card deal.

      The register wouldn't recognize the code so asst manager came over and discounted it while giving me the stink eye.

  • Publix has been offering this deal for years.

    Although it is not a great deal and I agree with you, William, saving $5.05 is better than nothing at all; and I always found the coupon misleading because of the $4.95 service charge. I have never taken advantage of this deal.

    Now, if they did away with the $4.95 service charge, it would be a better deal...

    • Your so called savings goes away the moment you shop at Publix. Unless you purchase the BOGO items, you're paying at least 15-20% more on everything compared to Walmart or Target. And I compare name brands, not just some random store or local brands.

  • Yes, I have to agree with @Andres. Prices (and quality) at Aldi make Publix a hard sell these days. I occasionally try to go for the gas card deal, buying specialty items at the Publix deli and some BOGO offers.

    For the gas card, my choice is WaWa since you can load the card on their app and use it to buy gas or their food, plus you’ll earn points towards a WaWa reward (usually a free fountain drink or discounted sandwich). And of late, there has been a boom in WaWa stations popping up in south Florida.

  • Publix is so overpriced you're better off at Aldi, even with a special deal. I've seen items at half off at Publix that still cost more than the equivalent at Aldi.

    • Partially agree, but.... For us anyway:

      -- Not as happy with Aldi's new makeover with emphasis on over-inflated organic produce, produce priced / LB instead of / unit, many deals are hard to find now. So other than Aldi weekly sale items, surviving more on Costco samples for now. ;)

  • Not showing up in central Florida ad. Didn’t know you were limited to $50 gc. I’ve had no issues picking up $200 gc with 50 in groceries

    • Actually it's in the colorful ad booklet, one page back from the last. That is, if you are in the FL area which could be also be considered central near the west bay. There are two booklets, one food and one non-food. Just try checking both.
