My mechanic stopped taking Amex because they took the side of a customer who had several thousands of dollars of work done and then filed a bogus dispute.

I'm guessing they have a deal similar to a lot of shopping portals- they get a sometimes substantial commission from the sites when someone used them. That adds up, I'm guessing.
