I’m so far below Platinum’s average income. no wonder AMEX never targets me with any of the sweet deal
This is Bill Gates walking into a bar scenario. Mean is skewed by the long tail at the right end of the curve. Amex Marketing at work again to target high value advertisers.
Bill gates LOVES that Walmart+ benefit.
Not really, “Musk and Bezos walking into a bar” would instead results in average household income north of 10 million.
This is more like a if you don’t believe that there is ongoing and worsening inflation so you don’t take any action; or you are too “comfortable” or “unlucky” or “unprivileged” to step out of your comfort zone, then you’re working hard in order to be paid a salary in nominal terms, but are actually paying someone else a good sum in real terms.
Unfortunately, more and more people waking up to the cold reality in general results in rising wages, lowering profitability, and faster rising prices all around, this positive feedback loop can take a long time to cool down once foolishly allowed to start.
TL;DR: Brace for another 1980s, and don’t forget that double digits inflation will eventually go away.
I’d be more interested in the median. I mean you add billionaires in there you can get a really high average. Also is this personal platinum, because if it’s biz plat also then these numbers don’t mean much.
In case you don’t want to click on the link, here’s the data on the Plat. I know there are some ‘high rollers’ on this website, but I’d guess most of us are far below these numbers. I’d say this shows why Amex doesn’t really care if this card is a gloried Entertainment coupon book now. If your net worth is over $4 million, you probably care a lot more about convenience (specifically in terms of Centurion lounges) than about a $695 AF.
Amex Platinum average household income
$474,000
Amex Platinum average household net worth
$4.3 million
Amex Platinum average age
56
Amex Platinum average properties owned
3.6
I have a coworker who has the Amex platinum. She doesn’t make close to $474,000. She likes the Centurion lounge access. I got the card years ago just for the bonus and then canceled. I don’t like the lounge that much.
We are under those thresholds for the platinum but not horribly far off of the income one, anyway. We are definitely way under the age/properties owned metrics.
Don’t underestimate the number of high income tech employees with this card in areas like SF and Seattle. It’s a popular card with this crowd, particularly with Centurion lounges in SEA and SFO. Most of those folks also have a corporate amex and so they qualify for the AF discount through the Corporate Advantage program.
I guess I’m below average
I would guess that the vast majority of people who get the Amex Plat card mostly for the signup bonus and/or who can use the benefits of the card carefully to outweigh most or all of the AF are below that high average income.
The average Amex Plat income of over $400,000 is probably based on people you don’t know who get the card not caring about the signup bonus and not especially caring about the benefits but just caring about it being an “impressive” looking card.
FYI – Delta is granting status to some subset of corporate travelers. Noticed last week my account reflected silver medallion status even though I hardly flew Delta the last two years (live near an AA hub, sadly). Received an email this morning saying silver status had been gifted through the end of August (180 days) because of my “corporate relationship.” I work for a large professional services firm.
