American Airlines Dynamic Award Pricing Now Live

Update 12/18/19: American Airlines dynamic award pricing is now live. There are one way prices to Europe for as much as 400,000 miles. In addition American Airline miles are now posting directly after a flight.

Update 6/3/19: According to Gary Leff this has now been confirmed.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise after both United & Delta have ditched award charts but there is a rumor circulating that American Airlines is already actively working on doing the same and moving from award charts to dynamic pricing. In a recent interview with Gary Leff from VFTW American Airlines said they were researching ways to enhance earn and redemption opportunities and a recent change to the award search tool also both point to moving in this direction.

I haven’t heard of any timelines on when American plans to make these changes and nothing has been confirmed yet, but I’d be incredibly surprised if this doesn’t happen and I’d expect it to happen sometime this year.

  • This definitely sucks. Can't book a December 2020 Australia flight yet but miles for searches farthest out range from 380k miles to 480k miles, when they were 375k a couple of months ago.

  • So AA introduces dynamic award pricing, yet retains the close-in booking fee (which DL and UA ended when dynamic awards were introduced). Classic Doug P move

  • How will this affect reduced mileage awards? Will the discount stack when the domestic roundtrip is less than 25K?

    Edit: Looks like when these are under the normal amount (ie. 8K miles instead of 12.5K) it shows up as a web special rate--so stacking is a no go.

  • Wow, I know it's a lot of bad, but I'm finding some betters. I fly often MIA to MEX and before lowest was 12.5k. All of January through May I'm seeing a ton of 10k options, with a few 8k in there too.

  • WoW, 400K+ miles is extremely disturbing, to say the least! I am now baffled as to where we go from here now that Dynamic pricing is among the 3 major airlines (Delta, AA, United) and some partners? The sky is the limit when it comes to award pricing now!! This is a very scary scenario!!

  • It's funny that there are investigations into if airlines coordinate secretly at the expense of the customer when it's pretty clear they don't -- they just roll out negative changes and the rest know to follow suit because it equals a bigger profit margin.

    Don't need to let the other airlines know via secret texts when you can put out a press release that says "here's how we screw them next"
