Our Verdict

This will usually work on variable load purchases, but if you don’t want to risk it yourself wait for somebody else to confirm in the comments below.

Make sure to save the offer ASAP, as you usually can’t save it up until the deadline (they’ll probably pull it earlier). You won’t earn fuel points on Visa gift card deals.  Make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases or use Chase Freedom this quarter (ends June 30) or any other card that’s running a bonus on grocery stores now.

Have your cards linked to Dosh to get 2% back on Safeway store purchases.

  • So I just grabbed this $500 card from a local Albertsons and was able to get the discount which brought it down to $495.95, I'd already maxed my chase freedom so used my DiscoverIT for another 2% back.

I wanted to try to cash out at Walmart via MO, can anyone help me out on how to do it? I've read that there's a particular way of doing it? Something about hitting cancel quickly. Or would another grocery store be better?

  • Just liquidated a $500 card from Safeway using Official Payments. MC coded as debit without a problem.

Also was able to get this using self checkout which surprised me - Safeway around here has been clamping down on GC purchases at self checkouts. Cashier had to approve but didn't care to check ID.

  • Just realized something new - MC is coded as a credit card, not a debit card, for 2 of the 3 IRS credit card vendors (PayUSAtax and Pay1040). Official Payments still recognizes this card as a debit card. Have not had this issue previously with Visa debit cards.

  • Does anyone know if you can then use these gift cards for MO at Walmart? I've only ever purchased the netspend visa's or paypal mastercards.

    • Not without some extra steps including pressing "cancel" on their POS before it flashes by and rejects your method of payment. Haven't done it for a while so I can't give you the step by step instructions, but it's been explained in detail before somewhere, either here or on FT, etc.

  • Anyone know if you can use this at both Albertson's AND Vons? I have both close to each other.

    • I know you can use one offer at EITHER albertsons or vons. Once you use it at one, it comes off your account.

  • Anyone hitted it on aspire getting their point posted? I am actually quite worried about that..

      • guess that amex no longer wants some ppl to use the hilton cc; my 197k & 48k pts for may & june stmt r not yet posted; already stopped using the card in june

think the review is random; while mine is likely under review, a friend got 180k pts for may posted along with the a free nite from the surpass

  • for july any CCs, except for amex who holding up bonus pts hostage, earns grocery cat 3x – 5x?

  • My Safeway wanted me to pay for a Visa card with cash yesterday. I'm curious to see if anyone else here will be asked to do the same.

    • Best to find a store with cashiers you know give no issue. I prefer buying at Fred Meyer (Kroger affiliate) since you can buy GCs at SCO without cashier assistance. SCO at Safeway require attendant intervention for GC and many simply don't allow GC transactions at SCO.

    • Yes, happened to me at a store I don't usually frequent. I was polite and mentioned that most of the other stores in the area allow CC. The manager told me they were having some fraud issues so they've instructed checkers in that store to ask the manager for permission and ID when a customer buys an open loop GC with a CC (even though the problem was with fraudsters buying a GC with a GC). There's one Safeway store in my area that will accept only cash for GCs, period. They too had problems with GC fraud a few years ago, especially the $500 variable ones.

    • I circumvent that issue completely. My Von's has contactless. So I always pay with Apple Pay. And they are happy to do it with the corona/paranoia/pandemic going on. Check the card reader to see if you can go contactless and hopefully you have an iPhone.

They have never asked me to pay with cash. But they have asked me, "how are you paying." I say Apple Pay and get no push back.

      • They've had contactless payment for years. I used to it to pay for my groceries. But they required a manager key and said "cash only" before scanning the gift card.

    • Some store makes their own rules for VISA/MC gift card with cash or debit card. Just go to another friendly store.

      • I went to another store today and had no issues buying the gift card with a credit card. Thanks, all.

    • Might have just been the cashier. I did 4 of those last month, one asked me if someone was making me buy it, another asked me for ID with my credit card and the other two didn’t blink an eye.
