The Offer

Safeway Link | Randall’s Link | Von’s Link (to get other brands to work just replace the safeway.com bit with their domain name)

  • Safeway/Vons/Randalls/etc is offering $20 off and free delivery when you use the promo code SAVE20. There is a $100 minimum purchase required and this is only valid on your first order.
  • Might be able to get another $5 by going through Swagbucks, try this link.

The Fine Print

  • Online prices, promotions and offers may differ from those in our physical stores.
  • This offer may not be combined with any other offer.
  • Free delivery offer is not valid for Lake Powell deliveries or in-store pick up.

Our Verdict

Seems like a great discount on your first order. It also seems like you can stack this with other promotions requiring a promo code as well, not sure if any others are currently valid though.

  • one my colleagues at work was able to use this for liquor even though i think that is specfically not included in the stated T&C

  • A recommendation based on a painful experience ordering from these guys. Right after you place your order, call the central customer service number (1-877-505-4040) and find out which store in your area fills online orders (it may not be your closest store). Then call that store's online desk (have to do this fairly early in the morning) and give them clear instructions not to cancel your order if something is not available, but to back-order it instead. Otherwise they will cancel your order at the drop of a hat, and you will not be able to use the first-time promo code again, and will lose the TCB $10 new customer cash back as well.

  • The code worked but it was a horrible experience and if there is any problem you won't get it or you'll have to wait five days for your refund assuming they give it and you'll be treated disrespectfully when you try. Good luck!

  • When I asked about the minimum purchase and the discount on twitter, @Safeway replied: "a $49 minimum purchase amount after promotional discounts is required to process and deliver your order. Thanks for asking!" .. So you'd have to order $69 or more using this discount.

    • That's not true. I had $51.xx in my cart pre-tax and after $20 discount and a $2 coupon from items in my cart I paid something like $28-$29 out the door.

  • Did it for the first time yesterday. Bought some stuff we normally buy there. They didn't have everything available though.

I was able to search their coupon section to add a deal but you don't get J4U savings like you would if adding to your account and shopping in store.

Waiting on delivery in a few hours. We'll see how it goes.

    • J4U works; they'll bring a register tape breaks it all down. Essentially what they are doing is ringing up an order on your account.

Couple of things to bear in mind:
      1) CHECK YOUR DELIVERY. If you allowed substitutions especially.
      2) You don't get billed until delivery day so don't use this for time sensitive spends.

    • Actually J4U works, unless the coupon claims "in store" only.
I successfully stacked it with 5off25.
My final cost was $4.xx because two gallon organic milk was out of stock. So, $4.xx for $40 goods eventually.

      • I just looked at their FAQ and you're right, J4U should apply, but seems it may take a while? Process seems a bit convoluted and from what I can see the $3 off $20 added to my J4U hasn't been applied to the final charge. This is my first order so I'm a noob here but I see $28.53 in my order total, $29.18 in my pending charge on my CC, and somehow at least $3 should fall off that before it posts? I'm not going to monitor it over $3 because I probably won't be using their delivery service again but it does have me curious...

    • Just giving an update on how it went. I received everything in my order. It was however at least 30 minutes outside of the hour window and to make matters worse wasn't any push notifications or emails sent notifying me that it was delivered. When you're dealing with cold or frozen foods this isn't reassuring when it's summertime.

All in all the promo is definitely worth doing but as far as long term there's no way I'd keep this service without heavy discounts unless they make improvements. It felt like I was part of beta testing despite this service not being new.
