The Offer

Direct Link (ad page 9)

  • Purchase $300 worth of Amex Gift Cards in a Staples store and get a $20 Staples gift card using the Staples Easy Rebate system

The Fine Print

  • Valid 6/5/16 – 6/11/16 (starts this coming Sunday)
  • Limit one per household

Our Verdict

Typically, these deals only make sense for those with an INK card from Chase or Amex Simply Cash since these cards earn bonus rewards at office supply stores. It happens that there is currently a targeted Amex Offer on some Amex business cards to get 5% back on Staples purchases of $200 or more, so this Staples deal can be useful to many. This will not stack, however, with the recent Amex Offer since that offer is only valid online.

This deal is a pass for me. Amex gift cards can’t be cashed out via the PIN and the rebate is in the form of a Staples gift card.

  • Pass this like a 300 mph speed train! Two years in a row I did this promo, and at least HALF the cards I bought did not activate, and AMEX was a pain in the @ss to deal withto fix the mess ...

I warn you all now; wait for the MC / Visa promo; AMEX GCs are not worth the effort even for 10X pts, if that existed!

    • Interesting... You're the first one to report this. I don't ever remember anyone on SD with this experience.
I have been doing these deals since they started and this never happened to me either.
Maybe your store's registers are often offline?

  • Damn, totally read the whole thing before I realized this was for a staples gift card instead of a $20 rebate vgc. That would be worth it, especially paired with NBA Finals

        • I mean, you can just sell the rebate card on Raise and end up with 85% of the value even after commission, more like 100% if you include the $1.50 listing bonus through Topcashback. Five seconds of work. Doesn't seem like a good reason to avoid.

If you don't want to deal with not being able to liquidate the Amex cards, and needing to to spend them down (and get 5x on $300 of otherwise non-bonused expenses), that makes more sense I suppose. Still seems like a good deal to me.
