Our Verdict

In previous fee-free offers, the limit-1 per transaction wasn’t actually enforced, hopefully this one will be the same. The fee-free deals are a bit better than the $5-off deal they ran last time.

As always, this deal works better with an INK Cash/Plus card or with Amex SimplyCash. Alternatively, there’s a Bank Amerideals offer some have. There’s also an Amex Offer on business cards with 10% off for the daring.

You may also be able to stack with the Retailmenot offer to get back $4 on any $30 Staples purchase – that deal can even be done more than once by re-adding the offer.

  • I just bought 3 at the same store. The clerk said she had seen guy buy 10 gifts cards at a time. I don't think she was aware of the limit of 1 per customer.

  • I just received the Ink business cash. Would I be able to use this offter to get the signup bonus? I have a few other purchases I can do so I would not be buying all giftcards to meet the 3K spend. Maybe about $1000 in giftcards providing of course my local staples will sell me that much. NY area if that matters.

  • My regular store that has been friendly now enforcing one per day. WM also getting more stringent. Getting to the point where it's just not worth the effort!

  • I went to Staples last night and purchased one card, at the time I asked if it was possible to purchase more than one without the fee but the manager on duty said no. I went back this morning to find a different manager on duty and proceeded to take two cards to the register. This time I didn't ask and the person scanning the card didn't inquire so I was able to get more than one without a problem.

I then went to WM and asked for a money order for $399.12. I ran one card and was not asked to provide a PIN then I ran the second card and that's when I was asked to provide the PIN. I provided the according PIN for the second card but the transaction didn't go through, I then reattempted with the same card and then the other card and still the PIN would not work. Can any one explain what happened or what I need to do differently please? 503 area.

    • I registered the cards and set up a personal pin online and asked the WM cashier to specify how much was coming off of each card. Maybe that will help. I had 4 cards and bought a money order for 800.68 68 cents for the MO. Four $200 gift cards and asked her to transact each one in increments of $200
      Hope thst helps!

      • I was finally able to make it to WM to try this. I asked for a money order for $400.88 with split tender. I ran the first card input the personalized PIN I entered beforehand and it seemed to work. I moved on to the second card and after asking for the second cards PIN I was denied. I then asked for a $200.88 money order with the card she said worked on the first swipe and that card was then denied as well. Any further ideas to this? I checked balances and their loaded and I went to the website and set the PIN as last 4 digits as regularly prescribed lol.

        Your help is greatly appreciated.

        • With each card are you asking that they manually enter $200 as a debit card before you swipe it? even if it’s $200.88, If the gift card is only $200 it will deny it because it’s not able to cover the 88 cents. Double check the balance and pin and when you go to pay for the remaining $200.88, have them run a debit card for the amount of $200 and you’ll pay cash for the 88 cents. I’d imagine this is the problem they they are running your card without specifying the amount of $200 on that card. I just got done doing $2000 of money orders doing it the exact way I described above. If that doesn’t work, I really don’t know, possibly a defective card?

          • Went back again and tried as you said, worked perfect! No idea the POS could be so fussy over the .88c. This time I just did 399.12 to make it simple and everything worked great. Thank you so much. Now I can slowly ramp up and take this to scale.

I saw you mention your buying 2k with of gc at a time but are you liquidating at no more than $800.68 so they don’t ask for your ID? Or are you okay with it for efficiency purposes?

I seriously can’t thank you enough again!

          • Happy to help William. It just worked out for me to do $800 - plus I read that there was only 4 swipes allowed so I followed that rule. Be careful though, I know from experience that those money center reps are trained to try to spot out “money launderers” and they can easily mistake you for someone trying to do something illegal.

          • There is a maximum on four swipes when buying MOs at WM so if you're draining $200 VGCs, the max amount you can buy is $800 plus fee paid in cash. With $2K, you can do two $800's and one $400 plus fees paid in cash. Or you can also do $799.12 twice and $399.12 with the .88 fee already included so just tell cashier you'll be paying $200 at a time with your debit card.

        • This Walmart in particular only charged 68 cents for the money order. Not sure why. I worked at a Walmart for 5 years and it was always 88 cents.

  • Is there a default pin number for these cards or do we have to create one using the website? I was able to purchase 5 cards in one transaction and there were no issues. Used RMN & CIC.

  • RED ALERT: I heard a DP that Amex has been clawing back 5% cashback on the Simplycash Plus. I recommend caution if using this! I'm going to refrain from purchasing these until I have more info.

  • Great promo, but the liquidation is fairly hard, and seems to get harder all the time. I now have maybe 5 places within a 5 mile radius of my house that will let me use a gift card to buy a money order. I try not to wear out my welcome (I mostly buy MOs with $500s to meet cc minimum spends) and, honestly, $200 gift cards look suspicious, especially if you split payment to get the near $400 MO. Each card only gets you 1000 Chase points if you have an Ink card. Hard to do at any scale. I guess if you were best buddies with someone with access to a Western Union terminal it would be easier. I'd love there to be an easy, cost-effective online liquidation tool.

      • what? seriously? u have balls of steel and must love russian roulette. so u really WM BP to USB? wow dude.

        • What's the problem with that? I just used Walmart Billpay to pay my Citi Double Cash credit card last week.

      • Is that better than asking the Walmart money center for a money order, though? Same general problem. My closest Walmart won't let me buy MOs with a gift card. I have only one store within 10 miles that does. And they're "suspicious," to say the least. If I regularly brought a wad of $200s there, I'm sure they'd shut me down cold.
