Looks like the $1 deal is dead sadly.

Our Verdict

Keep in mind you need to keep the subscription active for at least 45 days and if after 8 weeks you haven’t cancelled you’re automatically enrolled in a month by month subscription. Pretty sure you can only cancel by phone and it’s not the easiest subscription to cancel. Please make sure you set a reminder to cancel to avoid the ongoing fees unless you actually want the subscription (in which case I’d look for a better deal first) otherwise they win. I used to do deals like this a lot, but now I know there is a good chance I’ll be to lazy to sort it out properly so for 1,200 miles I’ll just give it a miss. If I needed the extra miles for a specific award then that would probably be enough to get me to do it. Still I know some readers love these deals and are better organized/more motivated than I so this one is for you.

  • I love when these come up. I've done 2-3 each of WSJ and Barron's with my AS account and it's one of the cheapest/easiest ways to pad my AS balance. If this comes around 6 times a year at 800-900 miles for each WSJ and Barron's, that's an easy ~10K miles for ~$12. This is also one of the few times my BofA credit card comes in handy since I can use ShopSafe to set up unlimited virtual temp accounts with a $1 purchase limit. That way I don't even have to worry about calling to cancel since the future charges just get declined. Combine that with disposable email addresses and you're in business!

Note that the portal terms do state "Eligible on one (1) subscription per loyalty account number" but not sure if that's actually tracked/enforced since my miles have posted every time.

  • When I click through to Barron's, I see only a $12 for 12 weeks offer. What do I need to trigger the $1 trial?

  • Hey guys I did the WSJ United cashback offer first and then I tried the Barron's one. I got an e-mail from United saying they tracked the WSJ one,. but I didn't get a tracking notice e-mail for the Barron's.. anyone else in the same boat?

    • Had the same thing happen, but with Alaska. The $1.00 charge was shown, but not the final price with a few extra pennies for tax. My guess is that the click TO Barron's was recorded, but whatever data showing the final sale didn't come back.

I opened up a ticket with the company that manages the shopping portal to get the points.

  • Passed a few months ago but am feeling better after hitting the United one with WSJ and could really use a top off on my Alaska account. In for one!

  • If I signed up the trial subscription, when does the clock start? Does the clock start immediately today or does it start when I receive the first issue? In other words, what's the earliest time I can cancel? Is it 45 days after today or 45 days after the first issue comes?

    Thanks.

  • FYI - Did the WSJ for my wife and I - Mine posted within 24 hours, but hers hasn't. Which is odd, because I did hers first. Anyway the one per household may be held true.

    • I'd give your wife's transaction some more time. I've done this offer for my four family members a few times (last Black Friday, then this March), and we've all earned the SW/United miles.

For the first SW attempt, it didn't get recorded by the SW RR shopping mall for one of the four family members, so I had to contact their support folks a few times to get it credited. Provided our receipt and waited about a month, but got the credit.

  • Didn't read the household thing before signing up. Used a southwest portal and a United portal, I guess we'll see if it posts!
