Our Verdict

I suppose Sunpower is a middleman who connects users nationwide with solar professionals in their area. Not sure I’d be comfortable scheduling a solar consult with no intent on buying, but if someone is exploring their options this sounds like a nice bonus to get around to actually talking to a consultant. Of course make sure to do your homework on the highest quality and best prices before making an actual solar purchase.

  • Why are they asking for a copy of my electric bill? Are they making their money by reselling the energy from the panels? Or are they trying to sell me a setup and say that it will pay for itself in xyz years? Whats the motive or angle?

  • When I priced solar myself I got a quote from Sunpower and it was not high pressure and their price/quality was very close 2nd place. IIRC it was like 30-60 min and yes it was a sales pitch. But in my experience it was not shady.
Of course YMMV with individual sales people but I wouldn't have a problem doing it again fro $60 free.

Sunpower is not just a shady 'middleman' or like a timeshare pitch.
They are one of the major established solar power companies. They're legit and their panels are high quality.

They're paying $60 here cause the installations are often >$20-40k so $60 is peanuts for a legit lead on a $20k+ sale. This is very similar to $50 gift cards for taking a test drive on a new car IMO.

  • Did a diy 14.4kw ground mount. I had help along the way and acted more like my own GC. The trick is most solar installer are 1099 so they can moonlight. Paid 800/d for 2 very experienced installers. My cost was about 35 before itc 22 after tax credit and credit card rewards (cedgreentech took multiple cc for chase ink spend 7500 bonus with spouse referral).

  • Don't trust these solar companies, they scam lots of folks for "rented" panels. You're better off buying the panels yourself and doing your own install, most of the time though it's not even worth getting the install.

  • I signed up for the promo yesterday. They want to make sure you own the house and the roof is almost new - to avoid having to pull up panels when the roof materal goes south. They also want to make sure that no trees or branches are hanging over the panels. THey will do a title search on the house to confirm that you own the house. They also want to see how much your electric bill is so they can earn some money before the power goes on the grid

  • We're interested in solar, but all the local companies are high-pressure fast-talking timeshare-like salesmen. I wish there was a straightforward talk to a real contractor option.

    • Well I’ll be the first to say it. Listened to a 20 minute timeshare pitch for a sunset cruise + dinner for two. Very worth it but yeah I get your point.
