Synchrony To Replace Chase As BP Credit Card Partner

BP is set to replace Chase with Synchrony (formerly GE Capital) as their credit card partner in the second quarter of 2015. Synchrony will be responsible for issuing co-branded and private label credit cards on behalf of BP. The co-branded credit cards will be able to be used at all of the BP locations and anywhere else credit cards are accepted. Whilst the private label credit cards will only be able to used at BP locations.

A representative from BP stated that they plan to release details about the new cards by the end of March 2015. They also stated that existing Chase BP cardholders would be transitioned onto the new cards. At the moment Chase offers two BP cards:

  • BP Visa® Card with Pump Rewards:
    • 25¢ per gallon rebates for every $100 in purchases made in the first 60 days – except on purchases made at non-BP gas stations
    • After the first 60 days you’ll earn 15¢ in cents per gallon rebates for every $100 in purchases made at BP
    • Earn 5¢ in cents per gallon rebates for every $100 in purchases made everywhere else – except on purchases made at non-BP gas stations
  • BP Card with Pump Rewards: Earn 5¢ in cents per gallon rebates for every $100 in purchases made at BP

It’ll be interesting to see if Synchrony changes the reward structure on these cards or decides to keep it the same. With gas prices plummenting a fixed value rebate per gallon becomes a lot more attractive for consumers. Chase declined to comment for this story.

  • Why would any gas company, BP Gasoline just sold the local BP Gas Station to Chevron. Customers did NOT recieve any advance warning of this. Imagine pulling into your usual gas station to fillup and finding that you can no longer purchase gas with your BP Card. After calling Synchronicity I am told that I now have to hit my credit card report and apply for a Chevron card. Total ludicrousness! I understand changing owners and business, but to not tell your loyal customers is beyond understanding! Why should I have to do anything? Why doesn't BP automatically advise it's customers that it is happening, within 30 days, so proper steps can be taken, in advance? If BP is closing down or selling a location, they should automatically, anyone in that zip code, it is happening!

  • I have always been able to access my BP Visa Account on the internet, but now I keep trying to access it
    I get all kinds of messages that it can't be connected. Give me a website where I can get in. I've
    never had this trouble before. Thanks

  • I've probably been one of the biggest critics of this switch from Chase to Synchrony. However now that things have ironed out, I'm very pleased. I drive a lot so the gas rewards are great. Seems like I'm getting more gas rewards than when it was ran by Chase. The website seems to work well, although I wish I did not have to manually download my transactions. And thankfully I have not had to actually phone them. Now I'm just waiting to see if I get the 50 cent per gallon bonus they offered a couple months back for spending $300 on their card.

  • I have had BP Chase Visa Credit card for 28 years. The change by BP to Synchrony has been a nightmare.If you try to contact Synchrony, you will speak to someone in a foreign country,if you press on you will get one of Synchrony's district offices .Synchrony credited my monthly payment to another account. It took 3 weeks to correct this. If Chase were handling this, I would have called the local branch and had it done in 10 minutes. I could go on but that's enough . PS my card was originally Texaco before BP acquired them.[ My father was a Texaco Dealer for 40 years]

  • I am sick of B.P. new Synchrony credit card.I had a late payment 2500 and they charge me interest on 917.00 when my balance was 558.00 . Tryed to talk to them about it and total screw by them. They are screwing the public.been with bp and other name they used over the years.

  • My experience with Synchrony is similar and agree they are the most idiotic company I have ever dealt with. I had the BP Chase card for over 20 years. It still had my maiden name on it. But after Chase cut over to Synchrony everything went south. First they locked my card because they suspected fraud. I could live with that. It was a little embarrassing at the restaurant, but better to be safe, right? When I returned home, I had a message on my answering machine. They requested me to call them regarding the potential "fraudulent" charges. (Well, yeah...I already knew the hard way.) When I called, the rep could not find my account, had no information about any fraud, did not know who from Synchrony called (but I eventually did get a letter from them regarding the potential fraudulent charges). They had no information at all on me even though I was with BP for over 20 years! My online account was locked so I had to mail my payments. The payments were getting posted late even though I mailed well before the due date. And of course I got hit with late charges. After being on the phone with them (the first time was a 1 1/2 hour phone call that went into the next day), I realized this company is run by complete morons. I cut up my card too. To bad because I like BP gas.

  • They are the most idiotic credit card company I have ever dealt with. Unfortunately based on my spending habits (mostly gas and groceries), they are the best rewards card I've found. If I could find another card that had a better rewards card for what I spend, I'd dump them like a hot potato.

  • Finally got my new card in the mail, still couldn't access my account online, so I had to call and someone from customer service helped me get in. Great so far. I paid my last statement online on July 25th, a couple of days before it was due. STILL hasn't posted to my account yet as of Aug 1st. Looked at the confirmation e-mail I got again, and it says it won't post until Aug 3rd. Why on Earth would it take over a week for an online payment to be credited to my account?! Of course, now I'm sure I'll have a late fee socked onto it since it didn't post until a few days after it was due, despite the fact that I paid it a couple days before.

  • Cutting up this card today. Trying to get setup for access to statements and I have never seen any company work so hard to not talk to me. Endless menus to get to a person.

    Waaaaaay to many other options out there to put up with this abuse. Goodbye Synchrony.

  • just got my credit card statement and my apr went from 13.24% to 26.99% wth ! double ! and when i call i get dumb remarks about 25 cents off gas ! REALLY ! you will be hearing from my attorney ! and i'm getting rid of the card !

    • Same here. My card went from 15.24% to 26.99%. Rep read me a "scripped reply" saying it was the current market situation!! Complete BS. My credit score is 831 at Trans Union and 848 with another one (never late, not even close to credit limit of 15K!! Would not budge off the APR. Not stupid, I did not close acct (hurts score) but you can bet your sweet tail it has a ZERO ($0) balance!!! NEVER WILL I EVER USE SYNC BANK for anything

    • Yep, I tried to leave a message with someone at BP, they referred my call back to someone at the Synchrony....what a joke. Not sure lawyer will be much help, as we have a choice to use another card we already possess (CHASE CARDS) or use another gas station. I am going to use another card for gas as I LOVE my BP folks locally. It's not THEIR fault that BP officials don't care about their current customers. I am disappointed though in BP not bothering to return my call and just passing it on to that scam bank. I don't have any cards higher than 10.99% and don't want one now. Let us know what your lawyer says!!
