Our Verdict
A few things to note:
- Giftcard purchases have typically worked as long as you purchase them from the front desk. YMMV if your location has gift cards or not
- If your stay is after 10/31/18 then you can call in and pay ahead of time and that has also triggered the offer in the past
Don’t forget to stack this with other Hilton deals:
- 2,500 Lufthansa miles per stay, valid until October 31st 2018
- Hilton: Moments Made Bigger (2x-3x Points) September 10th – January 3rd
- [Targeted] American Express Platinum Cardholders: Spend $750 At Hilton & Get 22,500 Membership Rewards Points (valid until October 15th)
- Check to see if you are targeted for any of these promotions for up to 50,000 Hilton points

What is the number to call in and pay ahead? I tried the reservation number yesterday and was told they are not able to do it
Anyone know if you can split across multiple cards when paying?
Got a spend $175 get 3k MR points offer on my Platinum.
I know that the terms state otherwise, but has anyone had any luck getting these to work outside the US? I’m having a couple of upcoming stays but they’re outside the US.
See my other post above. They show the full address of the hotel on the Amex website, so I don’t see how you could fool them.
I have a stay in northern Ontario at a Hampton inn. How strict are they with the us only?
It is charged in Canadian dollars. Will I get this amex offer? I will have fired fee on my card so I don’t want to pay 3% if I am likely to not receive the amex offer.
I guess it’s all coded on the back end, so how close it is to the border probably doesn’t matter. Now sure how they determine if it’s U.S. or not, might be currency as you suggest.
It’s the address! Look at this typical Amex info on a purchase at HGI (copied from my Transactions, expanded, on the Amex website)::

So since they get the address, I doubt that it matters what currency you pay in, they’ll know if it’s inside the US or not.
Makes sense
Looking at Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki. $170 is honors discount. $152 is advance purchase. $149 is honors advance purchase. Honors advance purchase is approximately 13% cheaper than flexible rate. This Amex offer about 17% discount. Advance purchase is excluded from this Amex offer. Even if you can use this offer to purchase gift cards can you use those gift cards to pay for honors advance purchase rates?
And what rate you do you get at the Hilton MVP site:
http://stay.hilton.com/mvp/
? That is often a lower rate than advance purchase, and yet is NOT advance purchase typically. (And despite claims that you have to show some affiliation card, no one has ever been asked for that to date when using an MVP rate.)
The reason advance purchases don’t count for these offers is that most Hilton advance purchases in the USA are billed through Hilton central, not through the the hotel, so it doesn’t come through as a HGI purchase, just a generic Hilton purchase, to Amex.
Oh interesting. Here’s the rates I get – those rates are not available for Seattle San Francisco and Honolulu for the dates I’m looking at. Darn.
For my AMEX credit card account, the terms for this offer include “Limit of 1 statement credit(s) per Card Member.” There is an authorized signer on my AMEX account with their own online login name & PW. Would the authorized signer be eligible for the offer if I have already redeemed my offer?
No
Update–Both my AMEX and the authorized user’s AMEX were used during a recent stay at a Hilton Garden Inn. I received both my and the authorized user’s $30 credits, for a total of $60.
