Our Verdict

Neither deal is bad if you’re in the market for a car rental. Keep in mind American Express cards do not provide primary collision insurance (Chase Sapphire Preferred & Reserve do).

I just want to understand why National/Hertz/Enterprise are so popular renting options, when their prices are always atleast 30-40% higher than companies like Alamo/Thrifty/Dollar etc for the same class vehicles? I recently booked a 3-day car rental from Chicago O’hare and thought of taking advantage of the National Amex offer, but even after the Amex discount, Alamo/Thrifty/Dollar were much cheaper than National. Am I missing something here?

given the type of blog site you are on, i am surprised at your question. i believe you can come to the conclusion yourself fairly easily. here is a simple but similar question. why do you pay 40% premium for apple products? if you dont like apple then why do you buy a higher class car when you can buy used honda civic?

While I understand the point you are trying to make, I am comparing the “exact same” vehicle at the two rental companies. If the exact same model of an apple iphone is being sold by two different companies, I will ofcourse go with the one which is selling it at a 30-40% lower price. I think your comment was directed more towards the service/experience/benefits part rather than the product part, i.e, pricier rental companies provide a better service/experience/benefits for renting the exact same vehicle compared to a cheaper rental company. I don’t know if that is true and that’s what my question was to begin with.

N/H/E are more of the corporate partners, vs A/T/D are more for leisure travelers. For leisure travelers, they might not care much about the rewards or the upgrade aspect but more focus on the cost.

I prefer National because with status you can pick any available car in the lot which essentially is an upgrade. Even when you paid for the midsize car, you may end up getting a large SUV and this kind of upgrade happens quite often.
