  • FYI pass for me based on the math. Found a wine I like and compared to Costco. Wine.com had for $11.99 (on sale), Costco usually has for $6.99. 13 from Wine.com=$155.87, shipping $39.45, take off $50 from the promo code and total $145.32 before tax. Take off $30 from Amex, $5 from Topcashback (which may not post due to the promo but let's say it does), so now $110.32, or $8.49 a bottle, compared to $6.99 at Costco. Also I have to buy 13 now.

I like to get sucked into these deals - but sometimes doing the math saves me.

  • I got this on my Delta Platinum and stacked with SkyMiles shopping. The prepaid shipping for a year definitely paid off already because it costs $10-15 or more to ship anything. Will shop through Chase for extra UR points for the rest of my subscription year.

  • I was targeted on my Blue Cash Preferred and EveryDay Cash cards.

FWIW, I went with four bottles from Ridge Winery: two 2017 Pagani Ranch Zinfandels and two 2017 Lytton Springs red blends. One from each pair can be drunk immediately and the other can be aged over ten years. This particular vineyard is well known, worth the price, and their website gives detailed tasting notes and instructions on how long to age (when to drink).

The bottles were listed at $43 each before shipping ($20 for FedEx two-day) and sales tax ($9, which seemed low for NJ, which has 6.625% sales tax). In contrast, at the winery's own website, the prices were $40 and $45 for the two varietals, which is before shipping and sales tax.

So after the $50 off $150 code, $30 off $100 with Amex, shipping, and sales tax, I will have paid $121 for four bottles of wine that list at $40 and $45 each!

I forgot to go through the cashback portal but using the $50 off $150 code probably would have nullified it anyway.

Thanks @will for the great post for these unfortunate times.

  • wine.com is grossly overpriced.

Pick out $150 work of wines you want, and then look for each bottle on winesearcher.com

Even before shipping is factored in, you can likely get that wine for cheaper than this deal. ANd more often than not spending a 100 bucks will trigger free shipping.

    • I pay for their annual membership (2+ years now) and order from them frequently.

The benefit of wine.com is that it has a huge selection, albeit at a higher price point as you pointed out; though there are always 10%+ discount codes floating around, frequent 10-15X ebates, and amex offers like this. You also cannot reasonably expect to find the cheapest price for all the wines you want on winesearcher.com available to you.

With all the stacking, I find prices to be reasonable, and you have the convenience of having wine delivered to your doorsteps.

    • I think this is a general rule, that any website with a name like [genericword].com is probably going to rip you off.

    • I looked at this-yea you are correct. Most of the wines I bought were $26-28 on wine.com and around $19 before tax on winesearcher.com. I think I probably still came out $20 ahead with the double-stack though but otherwise winesearcher.com is a good resource-thank you.

  • I'm a beginner of wine tasting. Anybody have any recommendation to buy on the website? Total price around $150 would be ideal so that i could use both the Amex offer and the $50 off $150 discount. Thanks

    • You can chat with a wine expert on the website-I did and he gave me several recommendations. I'd go that route-however if you are truly new to the wine game I'd also consider starting at Costco or some happy hours to get a feel for what you like. I fall in the Leslie Knope "bring me your cheapest red wine because I can't tell the difference" category most of the time.

  • William, FYI, wine.com sells brand name wine like you’d get at TotalWine or BevMo. It’s a little pricier (maybe 10%) and shipping can add up. But the inventory is huge, especially when it comes to more expensive bottle locals store don’t stock. The stacking deal is quite good.

A lot of the other wines resellers with Amex offers have a lot of cheaper bottles that no one has ever heard of. Could be fine, but not worth the effort IMO. I still have Martha Stewart wine just taking up space from one of these stacking deals awhile ago. Would have been better to just go to Costco with that money.

  • William you are The Man!!! Thank you again-you're such a resource. I got the $30 off $100 and the $50 off $150 and was able to buy 6 Napa Valley cabs for a pinch over $100.

  • Shipping on wine.com is always very high, if I recall correctly, unless you sign up for the annual plan with free shipping.

    • Shipping for me would be $37.30 which would make the annual $49 plan somewhat interesting if doing more than one order. Anyone know if you can use the promo code more than once on the same account?

    • So long as the charge that hits your AMEX card is $100 or more, it shouldn't matter.
