The Offer

No direct link, offer sent out via snail mail

  • Citi has sent out an offer for up to 60,000 Citi ThankYou points when you open a new new regular checking account. The bonus you receive depends on what account package you open:
    • 60,000 Citi ThankYou points. Open a Citigold Account Package and make $1,000 in debit card purchases and pay one or more bills for two consecutive months
    • 50,000 Citi ThankYou points. Open a Citi Priority Account Package and make $750 in debit card purchases and pay one or more bills for two consecutive months
    • 30,000 Citi ThankYou points. Open a Citibank Account Package and make $400 in debit card purchases and pay one or more bills for two consecutive months
    • 10,000 Citi ThankYou points. Open a Citi Priority Account Package and make $125 in debit card purchases and pay one or more bills for two consecutive months

The Fine Print

  • Valid until June 30th, 2018
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Citigold Account Package (60,000 Point bonus)

This account has no monthly fee but you need an average monthly balance of $200,000 to be eligible.

Citi Priority Account Package $30 Monthly Fee (50,000 point bonus)

  • The Citi Account Package has a monthly fee of $30, this is waived if you maintain a combined average monthly balance of $50,000 or more in eligible linked deposits, retirement and investment balances. There is no early account termination fee for this account.

Citi Account Package $25 Monthly Fee (30,000 point bonus)

  • The Citibank Account Package needs $10,000 in combined average monthly balances to remain fee free. Otherwise, there is a $25 monthly fee.

Early Termination Fee

In the past, Citi has not charged any ETF, and none is mentioned for this offer.

Our Verdict

So there are several variations of this offer, the public bonus is offering $400/$600 and that matches the 30,000/50,000 point offers advertised here. There is also the same offer but for American Airline miles.  The 60,000 point bonus isn’t worth considering due to the fact you need to have $200,000 deposited to keep it fee free. This offer is better than the public bonus if you value Citi ThankYou points (1.33¢ per point for the 30,000/$300 mile deal or 1.2¢ per point for the 50,000/$600 deal). Keep in mind these accounts both reduce the annual fee on the Citi Prestige by $100 as well (citigold and citipriority). We won’t be adding this to the list of the best checking bonuses because it’s targeted.

  • Do they send out 1099 forms for TYP? And will it work if I have citi priority before if I still want to do the priority pkg (closed 1.5 years ago)?

  • Is this 50,000 point offer better than the citi priority package $700 offer (in another citi post)?

    • NO - there are different types of ThankYou points - what you earn with credit card is transferrable to airlines, and what you earn with bank account is much more limited. Citi makes it very confusing.

    • My offer is

Eligible Checking Account Packages1 Minimum Balance Earn
      Basic Banking $5,000 $200
      Citibank $15,000 $400
      Citi Priority $50,000 $700
      Citigold® $200,000 $1,500

  • 11.03.2019 - opened - citi Priority
01.08.2020 - met all requirements (bill and spending)
02.10.2020 - got 50,000 thankyou bonus points into my credit card (premier)
    No monthly fees was charged
2.11.2020 - downgraded to basic banking account package - will keep it open for a while

  • Opened the Citigold account for this bonus a couple weeks ago. Got an email today with a link to the T&C's of the offer.

Found the below language regarding what wualifies as a debit card purchase:

"Qualifying purchases are those made using either your Citibank® Debit or ATM Card to buy goods and services and
are net of returns and other adjustments at the time of qualification. Qualifying purchases are signature or PIN based
debit card transactions. ATM withdrawals, cash back and bill payments do not qualify. Person-to-person money
transfer applications will not constitute a qualifying purchase. Qualifying purchases are determined in Citibank’s sole
discretion and must post to the new account within sixty (60) days of account opening. "

I have to admit I am a little worried about the "Person-to-person money transfer applications" piece above. Was that always in there or a recent addition for this round of the offer? If it's new it would mean Venmo wouldn't count I'm guessing for the minimum spend. Can anyone confirm?

  • Just received an email form Citi that I am not eligible for this offer because:

"You had a previous checking account open within the past 180 days before enrollment in this offer; therefore your new checking account is not eligible for this offer."

I did have a Citi Priority account open and closed late last year before opening this account, but I took screenshots of the T&Cs in the offer that was targeted to my TYP account that does not have any such language. Should I file a complaint with the CFPB?
