The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Open a new Citizens Bank checking account and receive a bonus of $400 when you complete the following requirements:
    • Open new Citizens Bank Platinum Checking account
    • Make a single direct deposit of $500 or more within 60 days
  • Or open any other account and earn a bonus of $150 (also requires a single direct deposit of $500 within 60 days).

The Fine Print

  • Primary signer on the new checking account may not be or have been a primary or secondary signer on any personal checking account within the previous six months.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

As far as I know there is no early account termination fee.

One Deposit Checking Account $9.95 Monthly Fee ($150 Bonus)

Citizens Bank Platinum Checking Account $25 Monthly Fee ($400 Bonus)

  • Citizens Bank Platinum Checking: $25 fee is waived with $25,000 in combined deposits

Our Verdict

Given that there is no early account termination fee it seems to make sure to go for the Platinum $400 bonus and just pay the fees until the bonus posts and then close the account. Shame that this one is targeted, if anybody is able to get it by just going in branch then please let us know in the comments below. Because it’s targeted I won’t be adding it to our list of the best bonuses.

  • Dan,
do you have any info on time between churns? You've had 3 or so now..

Thanks for any info, and anyone else..

  • Targeted only by incomplete application days before, it seems:

$400 ad on nearly every page i go to now, since a few days ago...last week i went half way thru application and just left. So, I'll just apply in the new page that opens from that ad... here goes!

last year did this with the platinum chking and had the 25$ fee pop up finally just a day after the bonus posted in third month.
called to ask for a forgiveness immediately, next day, and ok'd that and next day closed it out.

need to investigate churn. each year? after six months of close? six after bonus posts (nearly same for me)? LINK:

hmmm, well all that coding in the link leads me to believe it may actually be targeted, but just half fill out an application of your own and that'll set off a cookie, i guess...and then wait til the ad fills in your screen somewhere. Top of Forbes was my latest ad box and the one I'll do the applicaion from.
So, i won't paste my link here.

However, trimming it down to this bit of the link still gets the page to open. LINK:

    Let's see what happens...

  • FYI: Just received a targeted mailer today, only it's $225/$400. Offer runs from 1/1/18 to 4/30/18.

  • For Future Citizen's DPs:
    07/31/17 - $500 DD from actual Employer
08/30/17 Credit Memo Balbldr Bonus $400.00

...And as an added bonus, despite only having a balance of $2400 I havent had any fees yet. Im canceling finally, the Password/Resetting/ Re Logging in has been a nightmare.

  • I did this offer via mailer, just got the bonus today actually. Funded 1000 with Chase Freedom 4/6/17, IRS refund DD 4/21, $400 bonus posted 6/29. Have not received a low balance fee for Platinum checking yet.

    • Do you mean Citizens bank DONOT charge me the monthly fee for the first two months even though you don't meet the $25,000 balance requirement? I am surprised because the document says there is no grace period for checking accounts.

    • I'd assume they just pluck addresses from regions they'd like to target. Goal being to create relationships.
