Our Verdict

It’s basically a 2% card for those who have a TD deposit account. ‘Double Up’ bears an uncanny resemblance to Citi’s ‘Double Cash’, but again, in the case of TD you need to have a deposit account with the bank to be eligible.

Should be easy enough for those in TD’s footprint to open a checking or savings account with the bank if you want another 2% card option. You can also get a bank bonus for opening a checking or savings account with TD Bank as well.

A reader reached out to share the news of the new card, and added: TD Bank is more conservative on lending requirements, and normally uses Experian for their credit pulls.

  • TD sent me an offer for their business card. Same 2% back with a checking account, and $150 SUB after $1000 spend. I'd be interested in this in general, but I read some reports from 2017 that TD will report the business card to your personal account. Does anyone know if they still do this?

  • Has a foreign transaction fee, 3%. Paypal 2% mastercard has no fee, if that matters to you. Paypal is also 2% flat, not split when you buy and pay off your bill. No minimum to redeem. People don't like synchrony bank that sponsors paypal card, but personally haven't had a problem

  • For the record, TD Bank sent me a letter out of the blue the other day, saying that they were closing my extant TD credit card account.

Account limit was 10K; and my balance was zero. There was a dip in my credit score beforehand; but I still would have appreciated a heads-up...

  • Why do they charge foreign transaction fee on this card. Even the "TD Ameritrade Client Rewards" card they offered in the past with 1.5% didn't have one.

    • I've noticed that TD is also charging the 3% FETF for their Cash credit card as well (when they didn't do so in the past). Not sure yet if existing cardholders are grandfathered.

      • No grandfathering and absolutely zero communication from TD - they just started charging us foreign transaction fee out of the blue.

      • They advertise it as "$0" on the website. Doing some digging I can see that they put "3%" in the card fee table in the card agreement. So they are literally using false advertisement. I have this card so I'll probably call and check.

  • I have a Toronto Dominion credit card sock drawer

I use Hyatt or other more practical cards with simple rewards and no complicated foolishness

  • sounds just like the Fidelity CC except if Fidelity still has its $100 or $150 offer, then TD loses

  • Visa to me would be useful over mastercard at like costco. But would still do the Citi Premier to double cash product change if possible to get the better SUB.

  • Weak. Are we ever going to see a straight cashback card on all purchases that outdoes 2% Citi Doublecash?

    • SDFCU Premium Cash Back+ Credit Card
Earn 2% cash back on qualifying purchases
Introductory bonus of $200 if you spend $3,000 in the first 90 days
No Annual Fee, No Foreign Transaction Fee, No Balance Transfer Fee

Initial 10k approved, then bumped to 15k after about 10 months.

      • SDFCU also has the option for PIN-first, so you can use it at locations like train kiosks in Germany, and you won't get "ugh, Americans" looks from every waiter outside the USA. Not sure about a minimum redemption, but I think it's lower than the $25-50 for most other options.

      • what does that mean? Can you pay them with those prepaid debit cards you can get at a discount like through Swagbucks?

        • Not sure about those specifically. With a negative cost prepaid or rewards debit it's 2% and 1%+ everywhere. You have to get very obscure+risky to find better.

    • it exists, penfed powercash. but u need to have $500 in their checking account at all times in order to get the 2% cb. also no ftf. so technically its better than citi DC

  • says above you need to live in the footprint, but I got the cash card six months ago by calling in and using my out of state address

    • Yes but you need to live in the footprint to open a checking/savings, which is the only way to get 2% back
