I didn’t see any mention of the EATF in the fee schedule.

Our Verdict

Truist is the new name for the merged BB&T and SunTrust bank. Keep in mind you won’t be eligible for this bonus if you’ve held a BB&T/SunTrust or Truist account since 2/1/21. They launched with a $500 bonus,  but we haven’t seen that bonus return and normally it’s only $200 so I’d recommend doing this offer and will add to the best bank account bonuses.

  • Update 11/13/23: Extended until February 27, 2024.
  • Update 8/13/23: Deal is back and valid until October 31, 2023. Bonus has been reduced to $300, so worth waiting for $400 to return.
  • Update 5/27/23: Extended until July 25, 2023.
  • Update 5/16/23: Extended until June 1, 2023.
  • Update 4/17/23: Deal is back and valid until 5/15/23. Hat tip to Tornado
  • Update 1/22/23: Make sure adblocker is disabled to get promo code to work properly.
  • Update 1/22/23: Deal is back, has been increased to $400 from $200 and valid until Apr. 14, 2023. Terms do state ‘Offer Eligibility: Offer is only available to individuals who received a direct communication from Truist.’ so unsure if this targeted or not. Does show up in a google search for vague terms such as ‘checking bonus’.

  • Has anyone seen a payout post 11/1 T&C change? With or without real DD? Still nothing from me after completing non-DD by 11/4.

    • The reward will be deposited to the new checking account within 4 weeks after the qualification requirements have been met and verified.

    • No bonus here or for P2 yet under the new promo. Both of us completed the DD via Chase Biz payroll ACH. I pushed mine on 11/5, his a week later, still no sign of the bonus for either of us.

Looks like they were still paying out quickly prior to this change...I wonder if their system is still expecting debit transactions, even though that requirement was removed from the terms.

    • 11/01 account opened
      11/05 $50 initial deposit
      11/06 $1005 Chase
      11/08 $1005 Chase
      11/22 Still no bonus

  • 10/14 account opened, can't remember if I funded it
    10/24 Fidelity (cma) push
11/05 15 debit purchases finished (all normal purchases)
    11/15 $400 bonus

BTW there's another way to avoid monthly fee, have an open small business bank account (which in itself is free). So that way you don't have to keep the $500 in there or do a $500 push every month while you keep it open. So I'd suggest doing the business first (EIN is better) and then the personal, and close both around the same time.

I almost want to keep the accounts open long term because it's at a really convenient place for me and the people who work there are really nice (I had to go in and verify for the business account, but not personal) but $800 a year between business and personal is too much to pass up on...

  • P1 (me)
9/27 - signed up, received account approval email which shows the TRUIST400DC24 was used. Did not receive the "on your way to receiving bonus" email.
    10/4 - $500 work DD
Didn't receive debit card, had to call and get a card ordered. Very weird.
    10/25 - 5x $1 debit purchases for tax payments
    10/28 - 10x $1 debit purchases for tax payments
    Still no bonus.

    P2 (wife)
10/30 - signed up, received "on your way to receiving bonus" email
    11/1 - $500 DD from my work
    11/4 - 10x $1 debit purchases for tax payments
    11/5 - 5x $1 debit purchases for tax payments
    11/15 - $400 promotion received

I just called Truist support. They couldn't find any promotions on my account so they created a ticket to get the promotions team involved. I'm glad I have the signup email which shows my account & promo code used. They said I have to wait up to 15 calendar days for a response.

  • 11/4 - opened account
    11/8 - real dd of $500
11/8-11/14 - 15 debit purchases from various stores
11-14 - received an email saying I’m on my way to earning a reward

    11-19 - no reward
any ideas on why it hasn’t posted yet?

    • What code did you use? The bonus terms changed on 11/1 (or maybe 10/31) to require two deposits totaling $1k, and no debit transactions. If you signed up on 11/4 you might be under the new terms.

  • 10/17 Account Open
    10/25 $50 Initial Deposit (Fidelity)
    10/31 $1.5k Payroll Direct Deposit
    11/15 $400 Bonus Received

Pretty easy bonus. Just used the debit card for daily purchases until I hit 15 transactions.

  • 10/27 account open with $50
    11/4 $505 Fidelity push
11/7-11/10 15 debits (mix of $1 Amazon Pepper gift cards and some other purchases)
    11/15 $400 bonus

  • DP from a newb:

10/24 – Account opened with code TRUIST400DC24, initial $50 funding from Wells Fargo
    11/08 – $525.00 Real DD
    10/30-11/05 – 15x $1.00 - $1.05 payments to ATT mobile (5x day)
11/13 – Tracker updated tasks completed
    11/15 – $400 Bonus received

Apparently they charge $3.00 to external ACH out to another bank. What have others done? Pay the fee? ATM withdrawal? Other?

How long should I wait until I empty the account and close it?

    • @guest_1953037 To 0 my accounts I try to do Zelle to myself or my wife, which is immediate. If that fails for whatever reason, I'll just setup ACH withdrawal from my primary bank so it pulls the money from the account I wish to close. It takes a couple extra days for ACH verification and then transit time, but it gets the job done. Just gotta make sure the timing doesn't go past your statement date if you are trying to avoid a maintenance fee and you haven't done what's necessary to avoid it.

    • @guest_1950081 I personally don't think so. I feel that $500 bonus was related to them being a new bank merged with BB&T. I last closed the account in end of 2022, so it was time to churn again.
