Our Verdict

Annoying that you need a direct deposit for so long, but at least it’s a big overall bonus. Share your datapoints in the comments below.

I'll probably keep my DD going for the next few months to collect the $50/mo promotion too.

  • This available nationwide with a $5 donation to CRA. According to this page
    https://www.crautah.org/
scroll down to the donation portion and it says "If you would like to make a donation, please email communityrec@gmail.com. Persons who join the CRA with a one-time membership fee of $5.00 primarily fund the CRA. By becoming a member of the CRA you are also eligible for membership in Cyprus Credit Union."

    • @guest_1880015,

I didn't go to the link until now. Did you miss the below part? That would seem to exclude individuals like us. Do you disagree?

"You must be a non-profit organization, group or team. Primarily serving youth 18 and under."

    • That's a nice find by you. Did you actually try it? There are mixed DP of Chex sensitivity so I'm not sure if it's worth trying.

      • My Chex should disqualify me if they're sensitive. I got a msg from Cyprus asking if I am a resident of Utah - I'm not - or have immediate family living in Utah that is a member of the CU - no again. I replied with the above - we'll see what they say.

        • Customer Rep's response - "Correct, it says, "If you live in, work in, attend school in, or worship in Utah outside of Salt Lake County and will make a one-time donation of $5.00 to the Community Recreation Association (CRA)." Therefore, this means that you may live in Utah, but you just might not be a resident of Utah in Salt Lake County. You are still required to be a resident of Utah to join through the CRA. Since I am unable to approve you for membership at this time, I will be denying your application."

          • That's a shame. At least we didn't waste a Chex inquiry. Did you get in for CR and/or Altra?

      • @guest_1880015,

I'm tagging you in the unlikely event that you are not subscribed to this post.

  • I applied OOS but my daughter goes to University of Utah. App went pending and then they reached out for verification and I sent most recent tuition bill. I'm 24 accounts past yr and 36+/24 months so I was surprised I got approved due to Chex numbers but I did.

  • I live and work in required membership areas, but still denied for Chex. 15/12 and LOL/24

    • I'm just curious, do you feel that 15/12 is not "LOL" or did you just not feel like checking your stats for the previous 12 months?

      • 15/12 sounds LOL to me. That's why I initially didn't bother to apply figuring they were sensitive to it, but after another DP I went for it and was immediately approved.

        • I would be happy if I was only at 15/12. 3 of my last 4 Chex hits have been declines. :(

      • I'm LOL/12 - just started last November and I was approved 1 day later. So they must not be too sensitive?

        • @guest_1870859,

Are you OOS? If so, did you follow what @guest_1880015 described to get approved?

        • Well, I was approved, so thank you for the extra data point!
          I'll try for P2 tomorrow.

        • Alright, I gave it a try and got this "We’ll email you with further steps shortly."

          Fingers crossed

  • Applied OOS but have family that lives in service area. No credit card funding - either input bank routing/acct # or use plaid to transfer initial deposit. Application pending. Credit reports frozen so either they don't pull credit or I'll find out tomorrow if I need to unfreeze one.

          • Denied due to Chex

I'll have to get my report to see what my Chex count is.

          • @guest_1870935,

Did you ever view your report? If so, what were your stats before applying?

          • I have not but I haven't been very active for new accounts in the past year so I'm wondering if having my credit reports frozen was the reason. I got denied at great Southern Bank due to chex, but when I spoke to the rep there I found out it was frozen credit instead.

Maybe I'll unfreeze and try again

          • I don't recall ever applying with a new FI strictly for credit card funding. I guess that I would consider it if there was no Chex hit.

  • Applied with a legitimate Utah address and the application went into a pending state.
