Our Verdict
Let’s have a look at the highest sign up bonus to begin with. Their highest savings account earns at a rate of 0.2%, for comparisons sake we will say the market leader offers a rate of 1%. You need to have the account open at the time of the bonus posting (December 31st, 2014) and have to have it open for a minimum of 91 days, your best bet would be to open the account on the last day of this promotion which means it would need to be open for a total of 124 days.
If you kept $75,000 in the account (which is necessary to keep it fee free) you’d be forgoing $203.83 in interest. As such the $300 deal is not worth completing. Your best bet would be to open an easy checking account or 55 plus checking if you’re over 55 years of age. Here is how I’d complete this offer:
- Open an easy checking account with $1,000, this is enough to keep the account fee free
- Receive a direct deposit of $250+, using my employers payroll. For those who have difficulties changing this, one of these work arounds should work.
- Use my debit card ten times, making sure I make purchases of at least $3. Usually I just purchase Amazon gift cards, but because of the $3 requirement I’ll just use it at the self check out at a grocery store.
- Use my debit card ten times the following month
- Wait for my bonus to post
- Wait 91 days to avoid any early account termination fee
- Withdraw my funds to my usual bank account
- Close my bank of the west account
I’m not sure if I’ll do this bonus yet, I’ve already done quite a few bonuses this year and $150 is on the lower side. I think I’ll sit this one out for now, if other higher bonuses haven’t come out nearer to it’s expiry I might complete it. We’ve added it to our complete list of bank account bonuses. It didn’t make our best of page due to the fact it’s only open to select states.

Received the $100 bonus a couple of days ago. I mis-counted my debit card transactions last month (Doh!) but met the DD requirement with PayPal and CapOne. Thanks!
Both PayPal and CapOne 360 have posted as direct deposit. CapOne in March 2016 and PayPal in April 2016
Signed-up in late October 2015 under a different promo, funded $500 with Barclay Arrival+ MC, posted as a purchase. Received $150 bonus on 2/19/2016. Fine print said bonus would post by 2/29. HTH
Opened in CA. Funded with $500 using Visa. Mastercard is also available. No Amex. Not sure if the account is open yet, but ive completed the process for new application and easy checking $150. Theyve charged my card. Cash Advance right now is set to $1. It is ringing up as purchase. I think this isnt too bad considering the relatively short cancellation period and only $1000 minimum to keep it fee free.
New $150 offer for UT, CO, WY and it seems it allows credit card funding now, any data points on purchase vs. cash advance are welcome:

Is it already expired? I live in WA and I opened the link but didn't see any offer...
When you post bank bonuses that list certain states, does that mean they only have branches there or that you have to live in that state to be eligible for the bonus? Also, does Citi consider funding a bank account using one of their cards as a cash advance? I'm trying to finish the 10,000 minimum spend for the citi AA card.
It's that the promo is only eligible in those states. If any offer is available to more states than we have listed let us know.
In terms of the citi question, citi usually does. We have this resource page that might be helpful https://www.doctorofcredit.com/does-funding-a-bank-account-with-a-credit-card-count-as-a-purchase-or-cash-advance/
So Cal. No history.
Good luck!
FYI there's a targeted version in the mail I received today...
$250 when you open a Signature Checking and maintain an average monthly balance of $15k.
Nice data point! Where are you located? Any bank history with them?
