Will U.S. Bank FlexPerks Offer An Olympic Bonus This Year?

Will They?

The Rio Olympics are fast approaching (August 5th till 21st), historically U.S. bank has offered an additional sign up bonus on their FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa card. The promotion acts a little differently from most other sign up bonuses though, you received the standard 20,000 point bonus (for the Summer Olympics you didn’t receive the 20,000 base points) and then an additional amount of points for every medal the U.S. team won:

  • 500 for gold
  • 250 for silver
  • 100 for bronze

Travel With Grant alerted me to the fact that Citibank is a domestic sponsor (team USA) for the Rio Olympics and U.S. Bank is nowhere to be seen. After a little research I found that Citibank actually became the sponsor for team USA before the 2012 Olympics in a deal worth $30 million, as far as I know U.S. Bank hasn’t been an official sponsor.

Because of this I don’t see a reason as to why U.S bank wouldn’t run this promotion again. Visa is also a major worldwide sponsor of the Olympics

When Will It Likely Be Offered?

For the Sochi Olympics the offer went live on January 31st, 2014 (Friday). With the Sochi Olympics starting on February 7th (Friday). For the London Olympics I don’t know when the promotion went live (let me know in the comments) with the London Olympics starting on Friday July 27th.

How Many Medals Will Team USA Win?

I have no idea, but here are the medal tables and the extra points you would’ve won in the past four Olympics:

  • 2012 London: 46 gold, 28 silver, 29 bronze (32,900 points)
  • 2008 Beijing: 36 gold, 38 silver, 36 bronze (31,100 points)
  • 2004 Athens: 36 gold, 39 silver, 26 bronze (30,350 points)
  • 2000 Sydney: 37 gold, 24 silver , 32 bronze (27,700 points)

I’d expect around 30,000 points with a minimum of 25,000 points. You can view the value of FlexPerks here.

  • Looks like it ain't happening...maybe they won't to associate with the taint of the Rio Olympics...

  • I personally believe (no insight or info available) that Citi will have a promo for the Olympics instead of US Bank. What does that mean for consumers? You might want to wait until after the Olympucs before applying for any Citi or US Bank CCs.

    • I doubt it, Citi didn't offer any bonus the last two Olympics and they were Team USA sponsor.
