World of Hyatt Annual Free Night Certificate To Move To Calendar Year Spend Rather Than Anniversary ($15,000 Spend Night)

Update 11/24/20: This change is also going into affect for existing cardholders as well.

The Chase Hyatt card offers a free night certificate when you spend $15,000 in a year. Currently this is based on your card member year, but this is set to change to a calendar year. The wording is as follows:

For new accounts opened in 2020, you, as the primary cardmember, will have from your account open date until your anniversary date in 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases and earn a Free Night Award. You will have from the day after your anniversary date in 2021 through December 31, 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases to earn a Free Night Award. On January 1, 2022 your spend total will reset to $0, and the time period for you to spend $15,000 to earn a Free Night Award will run from January 1 through December 31 of each calendar year. For new accounts opened in 2021, you, as the primary cardmember, will have from your account open date in 2021 through December 31, 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases and earn a Free Night Award. On January 1, 2022 your spend total will reset to $0, and the time period for you to spend $15,000 to earn a Free Night Award will run from January 1 through December 31 of each calendar year.

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like you can spend $15,000 on January 1, 2021 to trigger two free night certificates as the spend resets on card anniversary. It does still give you the opportunity to earn two free nights in 2021 though (e.g one early 2021 and then again after your anniversary resets).

Is anyone else experiencing a delay in receiving their 2nd cardmember year FNA? WoH card opened in May 2020, completed spend on the first cardmember year award in early April this year and FNA deposited a week later. Received the anniversary FNA two statements later, as expected. Completed the ‘anniversary to 12/31/21’ spending and it’s going on 3 weeks and nothing yet.

  • @will maybe you can modify this post a touch (or the other post that discusses the conversion) to help inform how this free night with $15,000 spend change affects legacy Hyatt cardmembers that were product changed by Chase on January 11. I originally thought that since I had my legacy Hyatt card opened for several years now and I would be a new World of Hyatt cardmember in Jan 2021 that I would have ALL YEAR to earn my free night, but it seems that is not the case.

I received this letter in the mail last week with my new card:

"Your new world of Hyatt credit card has arrived

    ...

With your World of Hyatt Credit Card, you can also earn an additional Free Night Award at any Category 1-4 Hyatt hotel each your you spend $15,000 on your card, and the way you earn this benefit is changing:

    * From the date you become a World of Hyatt Credit Card member until your original Hyatt Credit Card account open anniversary date in 2021, you can earn a Free night Award by spending $15,000 in purchases.*
    * You can earn another Free Night Award by spending $15,000 in purchases between your 2021 cardmember anniversary date and December 31, 2021.*
    * On January 1, 2022 your spend total will reset to $0, and you'll have until December 31, 2022 (an entire calendar year) to spend $15,000 to earn a Free Night Award. This will repeat each calendar year.*

  • I'm trying to find an answer to my specific situation. Any help will be much appreciated. I'm an existing World of Hyatt VISA cardholder. Anniversary is in February. The letter I received from Chase states that I can earn 1 free cat 1-4 night if I spend $15k from my anniversary in 2020 thru the anniversary in 2021; then another one from the 2021 anniversary thru 12/31/2021. I have already spent $15k in 2020 and received 1 free night in August. Do I get another one in February if I spend another $15k? Do I get another one without spending another $15k, just because I already spent that much between Feb 2020 and Feb 2021?

  • Where can I find my spend progress towards the $15K? With Amex HHonors its right there on the main account page.

  • Not sure of the mechanics of this switch, but EVERY card benefit should run on calendar year, not cardholder anniversary year. This is especially true since the card issuers do a bad job of informing people of their anniversary. Heck, this year, I converted one AMEX Hilton card to a different AMEX Hilton card and assumed that my anniversary date for the new card was when I was approved. Wrong -- AMEX moved my anniversary date from my old card, and valuable benefits (like a free dining credit) expired on me before I could use them. Asking people to know and remember their anniversary date when the card issuer doesn't actually tell you that date is stupid.

  • WHAT I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE ---

HYATT MOVE TO DAY OF EXPIRATION FOR CERTIFICATES == PRESENTLY IT IS THE NIGHT BEFORE == FOR 12/31/20 EXPIRATION == LAST DAY TO USE IS 12/30/20!!!!

All the other programs use the date of expiration is the last day to use the certificate, e.g., Hilton, Marriott, IHG.

Hyatt stands alone in the way they process this.

With all the certificates now extended to 12/31/21, I would really like to see them change the way they determine the expiration date so that I could at least use one of those extended certificates on New Year's Eve 12/31/21!!!!!

  • Does this mean you can get 2 fn in 2021, and after the spending reset after 1.1.2022, you can again spend 15k to get another fn?

    • Yes but it’s still spending $30k for a measly two free nights, if I’m understanding correctly. Seems like not that great of a deal/better options out there.

    • Yes. For e.g. my anniversary date is April, so I'll get my $15k fn for 2020-2021 and then on April 2021 it resets to $0 so I'll spend another $15k to get one for April 2021-Dec. 2021. That makes two for 2021. Then on Jan. 1 2022 it resets to $0 again and now I can get a third fn right away depending on how quickly I do the spend. So for me that's 3 fn's in about two and half years rather than the normal three. In short, it's not really that big of a deal, but I guess it's better than nothing.

  • So much easier now to keep track of spending. My anniversary is in July, so I would need to add monthly spend after anniversary to track. Now if they could put something on Chase’s website to track the $5k spend for 2 qualifying nights....

  • Is it even worth getting this card? I was planning to get it in feb 2021for the annual free night but there is no way I'm going to put 15k a year on it

    • If you have a CSR, CSP, or CIBP then I would highly recommend this card. Hyatt is really the only hotel transfer partner for Chase that's worth transferring UR's to because the point valuations are similar, and in some cases Hyatt points can be more valuable.

    • You still get a free night on your anniversary. This is a second free night you can get for spend.
