Direct link to offer

Card Details

  • $250 annual fee
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • Earn 3X Miles on Delta Purchases2 and at Hotels
    • Earn 1.5X miles on single transactions of $5,000 or more, up to 50,000 additional miles per calendar year
    • Earn 1x miles on all other purchases
  • Earn 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $25,000 and $50,000 in purchases on your Card in a calendar year.

Our Verdict

Not as good as a previous deal that was 50k miles + $200 statement credit. Unfortunately the annual fee isn’t waived the first year on this offer. The upside is you can get this bonus even if you’ve held the Platinum card before. If you want to know more about AmEx upgrade offers, read this post.

  • Is there a number of months that this needs to be active before downgrading to another Delta card before a clawback?

  • Got the offer for Delta Gold Biz ---> Platinum 40k $4,000 spend in 6 months. Upgraded last month and now have a Delta Plat Biz ---> Reserve 50k $5,000 spend in 6 months.

  • Very underwhelming. I will probably put this last on the list and if regular inking has a dry spell, then I may do this. But I agree with what others have said - Delta is slim pickens on how we can use the Skypesos, including bang for the peso.

    • No, you won’t qualify*. Simply having the card is enough to trigger the “lifetime” restriction.

*In practice, the lifetime language is not strictly enforced for some customers

  • I just accepted this offer because I figured that I would pay $250 for 40,000 miles and not have another inquiry (trying to get <5/24). Plus I should be able to get a TSA precheck for my wife for free. I was charged $180 "membership fee" (prorated?)

My offer is 40,000 Bonus Miles after $4,000 within the first 6 months.

  • I’m not really sure about any excitement over Delta points. I have 75k in points, $600 in Delta gift cards and $200 flight credits that I honestly can’t find a use for.

I do fly regularly but with Delta, layovers and being more expensive than many other airlines, I’ve been sitting on the points and gift cards for well over 4 years.

Where does everyone find uses for Delta points? I’m not interested in flying first class, the back of the plane is going to the same place.

    • Definitely airport and route dependent. My home airport is SEA, which seems like its a great place to use Skymiles (and for Delta paid fares). Up and down the west coast, I can often get 1.5-2 cents/Skymile, for tickets I would have otherwise paid cash for. Last time I visited my parents in PHX it was 10k roundtrip. I was upgraded both ways (have Delta elite status), and also got 2500 miles each way for late bags. So 5k net miles roundtrip and flew in first. Last couple times I flew to Hawaii it was less than 20k Skymiles roundtrip (and was again upgraded, both times to lie flat seats).

In summary, there are great redemptions out there, but it may just be in very specific routes. And definitely not for premium cabin international tickets; Skymiles are terrible for that.

  • I have the Amex Delta Business Gold Card and received this offer. For me, the card has outlived its usefulness and I was going to cancel it. So, an upgrade would be like buying points: $250 annual fee plus the opportunity cost by not using a better card for the $4k in spending. Do you own math and see if it is worth it.

    • You also get the companion certificate which saves me $500 annually. Delta flights are not cheap nowadays

      • Not on the card upgrade itself. Only upon renewing the Platinum card. But, if one is not going to renew the card - that is, is only after the upgrade offer, then cancel - then one has to exclude the certificate from the math.
