Probably better as a gift. And if you really do want to take the hassle to resell, you can probably make somewhere between $30-70 by reselling

Do you need to be a Verizon wireless customer or can you just make an account?
You need to be a Verizon customer for Verizon Up, but not to use one of the codes on the Microsoft store if you get one from somebody. It looks like they do not allow posting of the codes here, but there are some deals sites where people are posting codes.
Code needs to be redeemed on verizon site amd not Microsoft.
Thanks for the clarification! For some reason I thought it takes you to Microsoft store to purchase (probably because of the quantity that it seems they have in stock).
