We’ve previously written about how you could earn $200 by signing up to Chase Total Checking (and another $200 by signing up for their savings account), unfortunately you needed a promo/coupon code. You can buy these from eBay for about $10-$20, but some people were a little hesitant and asking me if it was possible to get a bonus without the coupon code. It is possible, but the sign up bonus is only $150 and it’s only available for the checking account and not the savings account. What’s required is also a little bit more tricky.
The offer
- Receive a $150 cash bonus when you set up a Chase Total Checking Account and
- Deposit $100 or more within 10 business days of opening the account
- Have a direct deposit hit your account within 60 days of account opening
Chase specifies that the direct deposit has to be paycheck, pension or government benefits (such as Social Security) from your employer or the government. But from our experience they will count almost any transfer as a direct deposit, including the following: ACH, American Express Serve & Bluebird. Amazon payments, capital one 360, HSBC, Mango & Paypal transfers will not count towards the direct deposit.
The fine print
- Monthly account servicing fee of $12 ($10 for those living in CA, OR & WA) unless you do complete one of the following:
- Have monthly direct deposits totaling $500 or more made to this account
- Keep the daily balance in your checking account at or above $1,500
- Keep an average daily balance of $5,000 or more in any combination of qualifying Chase checking, savings and other balances
- Bonus will be deposited after 10 business days of completing the requirements
- Offer only available to non-existing customers (considered an existing customer if you’ve closed a checking account within the last 90 days)
- You can only receive one chase checking bonus per year
- Bonus is considered interest and will be reported to the IRS
Our Verdict
You’re going to be slightly better off buying a chase coupon from eBay as they usually only cost $10-$15 and result in you getting $200 instead of $150, they also have the option to get another $200 by opening a savings account and depositing $15,000 in new money.
For those not wanting to take the risk of dealing with eBay, this is a great offer. It’s easy to meet Chase’s requirements and they pay out the bonus quickly. If you have a spare $15,000 laying around then it’s definitely worth whiled getting an ebay coupon as it could mean an extra $250 in your pocket.
This deal will be alive until the 31st of March, 2014.
