This offer has now expired, but there is a new better bonus for $200.

Must open in-branch, not online; fine print indicates that over the phone is an option as well at 1-866-671-5353. Must present coupon for either option.
- Direct deposit required: Yes, no minimum mentioned; in the past, it’s needed to be $100 minimum. Click here to see what’s been working for the direct deposit requirement.
- Additional requirements: Three bill-payments
- Hard/soft pull: Soft
- Credit card funding: None
- Monthly fees: $11-$25, waivable
- Early account termination fee: None listed (there has been some mention of a nine-month requirement in the past so it may be worth verifying)

- Receive a sign-up bonus of $200 when you open a checking account with Fifth Third bank and completing the following:
- Set up a direct deposit ($100 minimum in the past)
- Pay three bills online using Fifth Thirds online bill payment service
Enter you email address to receive the coupon – it comes within minutes.
The Fine Print

- Requirements must be fulfilled within 90-days of account opening
- Must present coupon code at a banking center or during the phone call to receive bonus
- Offer not available to existing checking customers or to those with a Fifth Third checking account that has been closed within the last 12 months
- Offer not available to new Fifth Third checking customers in Northeast Ohio
- Bonus offer available to new consumer checking customers, excluding Fifth Third Basic Checking, Fifth Third Private Bank products, and Business checking accounts
- Limit of one new account-related gift incentive per calendar year
- Bonus will be deposited within 6 weeks of meeting requirements
- One bonus offer per account per household
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
The easiest option for most is to choose the Essential Checking account which has an $11 monthly fee. The fee can be waived by maintaining an average monthly balance of $1,500 or more across your savings and checking accounts.
The fine print indicates that the Military Banking and Student Banking accounts should also work for this bonus.
- If you are in the military, choose the Military Banking option and you’ll have an additional option for getting the monthly fee waived by receiving $500 in direct deposits each month.
- If you are a high school or college student age 16+, choose the Student Banking option for no monthly fee at all.
Our Verdict
Pretty good bonus overall; the direct deposit requirement has been easy to fulfill in the past, and the bill payments shouldn’t be a hurdle for anyone. There is $1,500 getting tied up here (unless you are a student), but that should be worth it for the $200 bonus.
Assuming the phone option works as indicated, this offer can be used by even those who aren’t especially close to a branch.

The promotion is back! https://www.53.com/personal-banking/checking/essential.html
did my 5/3 in TN the other day, too, and spent entirely too long in there (30min). still worth it for $200, but wow that was annoying.
Were you offered an official Predators jersey if you signed up for their credit card? 🙂
Any idea if this can be funded with a credit card?
No, we clearly list this at the top of the page as well. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/does-funding-a-bank-account-with-a-credit-card-count-as-a-purchase-or-cash-advance/#Fifth_Third_53rd
Quick question.
My Discover ACH is recorded as ”Discover Bank Prearrange” on my 5/3 checking account. Does “Prearrange” counts as DD? Thx!
This inroudtces a pleasingly rational point of view.
Opened my 5/3rd account in TN this morning. It went smoothly, but had to spend a lot of time in the branch office listening to the up-sell spiel, including the free Predators hockey jersey if I’d apply for a new credit card.
Opening the SunTrust account online (for the same $200 bonus) was so much easier.
Yeah, in branch bonuses are quite annoying. But that up selling is precisely the reason they want people to go in branch.
I opened a new bonus eligible Fifth Third account in PA today. Still need to implement DD source – will do this tomorrow with bank transfer or Serve. Is one better for this purpose than the other? Time is of the essence since PA branches acquired by First National and transition expected approx. April.
Okay. Good to know. I will pursue tomorrow. Thanks.
Hello and happy 2016 – Per today’s newsletter on bank bonuses, I spoke this PM
to a PA branch of Fifth Third Bank to confirm they
accept transfer funds as DD from another bank where I have
an account. The account rep said FTB is
not offering any new account bonuses right now. The acquisition by First
National may be reason. Rep said check back in 3 months when new systems
are in place. Is this PA-specific or do I need to speak to someone else at
FTB? Thanks for input – MJM
Never ask if a bank transfer counts as a direct deposit, it’s a work around and not part of the terms. This offer is still live, so not sure why the rep said that.
Hi,
I had a 53rd account open a while back…but don’t have the exact date. Is there any way to find out if it was closed in the prior 12 month period or before that?
Thanks
yes, you should be able to call or go in branch and they can tell you.
Does anyone know what counts for DD by Santander Bank. PP. Bluebird? Thank you

Thanks I saw that but by Santander its all crossed out. is it not working only for the $20 a month? I opened a Santander account for the $150 offer
