Update 5/3/21: More targeted.
Update 3/25/21: More targeted, this time when logging into personal checking account. hat tip to reader erik
Original Post:
It has long been possible to bypass the Chase 5/24 rule on personal cards by looking for ‘Just For You’/’Selected For You’ green check mark offers. Yesterday reddit user GR1022 saw an offer on a business card with a black star saying ‘For Business Owners’ when checking for Just For You offers. This offer has a fixed APR and despite being over 5/24 GR1022 & others (gofarhaveacigar & Pointsmiles) have been approved. I haven’t been able to independently verify this as the offers don’t show up for me, but based on the amount of datapoints this seems to be working. The offers look as follows:
Some other information:
- These are showing up on personal accounts (not on personal & business combined accounts)
- Standard offers are showing (e.g $500 on the Chase Ink Cash/Chase Ink Unlimited and 80,000 on the Chase Ink Preferred)
- After applying for one card the other offers will disappear, so apply for the card you want the most first
Post history:
- Update 12/30/20: More targeted.
- Update 12/6/20: More people targeted.
- Update 1/28/20: More people targeted
- Update 11/16/19: More people targeted
- Update 8/25/19: Looks like more people have been targeted, worth checking to see if that includes you.
- Update 6/4/19: Multiple reports today that new people have been targeted for these offers which are immune to 5/24 (1, 2, 3). Be sure to check for the fixed APR.
- Update 4/25/19: Many more data points indicating this is bypassing 5/24. Interestingly after applying some people are still seeing the other offers and have successfully been approved for a second card. For most people the other offers disappear after applying but that doesn’t seem to always be the case. Best idea is to still apply for the card you want the most first and then maybe you get lucky and can get a second card a swell.
Reader e-mailed this in: I have data point that maybe important when doing the pre-approvals on offers for you on the Chase Website. I had all three business cards in my list saying I was pre–approved. I am over 5/24 so I applied for the Ink preferred last week and denied. Letter listed only issue as the number of accounts opened in the last two weeks. I went back and when I clicked on the offer I noticted that the application changed. The first application had no info filled in—the second had almost everything filled in and just asked for income and a couple of other items. Submitted and I got approval this morning. Maybe you should warn people to make sure they apply with the one that is prefilled. I used the same link on both while logged into the system by the way—also the first time I kept getting error messages.
Is it also essential make sure that rate of apr is a fixed apr rather than range?
AFAIK yes
Thank you for all this information. I also had 2 offers, one for the Ink Business Unlimited and another for the Ink Business Preferred. I first applied for the preferred and got instantly rejected for 5/24. Then I read what you have here, and found that indeed that one had a variable APR while the unlimited had a fixed APR. I then applied for the unlimited and was instantly approved. I didn’t notice much difference in what was pre-filled. I think I had to fill in the business name, business type, and income in both cases.
Hopefully we can get confirm this through DPs. I have 2 Ink offers with the black star and prefilled app info, but both have variable interest rates. Are we at the point where we know for sure it’s not worth applying?
I don’t know for sure, sorry.
How do you see in the offer if it’s a variable rate or not, is it a range ? My offer gives a 29 percent but then says it varies with the market, nothing about fixed …
I applied for the business checking account and DIDN’T apply in branch for the Ink card (my buddy did and was denied).
Weeks later was pre-approved for all the Ink cards. Similar to other DPs, once I applied for the Preferred the others went away.
Didn’t get a black star but applied after being denied in December. Didn’t get auto approval, but new card showed up next day in my account. They only gave me 3000 credit which is the lowest I’ve ever had.
Applied 5/1 on a targeted mailer; denied for 5/24, but only 4/24 on personal. Not sure if they are counting other Inks, they have not in the past.
would this work for Sole Proprietorship? I’ve been denied in the past because my business wasn’t LLC.
thanks
I could live to be 150 years old and *never* have one of these Black Stars waiting for me on my CHASE account.
“These are showing up on personal accounts (not on personal & business combined accounts)”
Still the case?
*shows up three years after you die*
William Charles Just had some pop up for me today. 100k for CIBP; $750 bonus for CIBC; $750 bonus for CIBU all for $7.5k spend in 3 mo
I haven’t gotten a Chase card since 5/24 went into effect. After seeing this post, found I had 3 targeted “You’re Pre-qualified” business offerrs in “Just For You”. I applied for the 750 cash back on 7,500/3months. Got the usual Experian pull notice and Chase’s 30 day decision (via mail) email. Not going to call recon since I applied for my “business.” Now for the waiting game.
Only thing worthwhile i got is $300 Business Complete Checking
Which i dunno if i should pull the trigger or wait for the $500 one to come back
I have this happen ONCE in the bazillions of years I’ve had a Chase card.
I’ve never had any black star offers.
Same
Ditto.
