The Offer
- Fifth Third is offering a bonus of $500 when you open a new Fifth Third Essential Checking account and complete the following requirements:
- Reach a balance of $20,000 within 45 days of account opening and maintain that balance for 90 days from the date the balance requirement is met (seems like you need to deposit an additional $20,000 and minimum opening deposit is $500. So total would be $20,500)
The Fine Print
- To qualify for the $500 bonus: Open a new Fifth Third Essential Checking® account, within 45 days of account opening, reach a balance of $15,000 or more and then maintain a minimum daily balance of at least $15,000 for 90 days from the date the balance requirement is reached.
- Offer is not available to existing Fifth Third checking customers or to those with a Fifth Third Checking® account that has been closed within the last 12 months.
- Account must be funded within 45 days of opening. Bank reserves the right to limit each customer to one new account-related gift incentive per calendar year.
- Essential Checking account must be opened between 6/19/2019 and 10/31/2019.
- No minimum deposit required to open a checking account. Bonus will be deposited into your new checking account within 10 business days of completing qualifying activity requirements. Bonus may be taxable as interest income and reported on IRS Form 1099-INT.
- The $500 cash bonus offer is valid for Essential, Enhanced, Preferred and Free (where available) checking accounts only. Enhanced, Preferred and Free checking accounts must be opened at a banking center. See your banker for details. Not valid with any other offer.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Essentials Checking $11 Monthly Fee
Essential Checking account is required for this bonus and has an $11 monthly fee. The fee can be waived by maintaining an average monthly balance of $1,500 or more across your savings and checking accounts.
Early Account Termination Fee
This account does not have an early account termination fee
Our Verdict
Previously the best bonus was for $300, but the requirements were much easier to meet (e.g just deposit $500 and maintain that for 60 days). That same deal is also still available, but only for $250. This is an extra $200 (or $250 compared to current offer) but you do need to maintain a balance of $15,000 for 90 days. That’s still worth doing even though these accounts basically earn no interest, but might not be an option for everybody. I’ll be adding this to our list of the best checking bonuses.

What’s the bonus amount ?
For biz or personal ? Standard, Premium or Elite are biz account types I believe.
Good point. Apologies – I should’ve commented on the business one (I thought I was).
Hey Joshua, I’m not seeing this offer/ad when browsing or on FB. Would you kindly email ( [email protected] ) me the unique code next time you see this offer/add ? Much appreciated in advance.

Will do. If I don’t see it in a couple of days, I’ll email you my extra one that I sent another address.
Joshua Hey Josh, could you email me that extra code at [email protected] ? Thanks!
This deal is still active, but is not on the website. They are sending mailings, and at least in NC it is being promoted in-branch. Same terms as before:
Deposit $500+ within 45 days and maintain for 60 days thereafter for $250.
Increase by $15k within 45 days of account opening and maintain that balance as a minimum daily balance for 90 days for another $250.
It’s not clear to me with that wording (increase by 15k) if the minimum for the full bonus is 15k or 15.5k. I’m going with 16k just to be safe.
Get $250 when you deposit $500 for 60-days. Expires 4/30/2020

To qualify for the $250 checking bonus, provide the offer code, open a new Fifth Third Essential, Enhanced2, Preferred2, Free Checking or Free Checking plus Extra Time® (where available) checking account by 4/30/2020, reach a $500 balance within 45 days of account opening, and maintain $500 as a minimum daily balance thereafter for 60 days. The $250 checking bonus does not require any additional activities.
The cash bonus will be deposited into your new checking account within 10 business days of completing qualifying activity requirements. In order to receive the cash bonus, your checking account must be open and in good standing. Offer is not available to existing Fifth Third checking customers or to those with a Fifth Third Checking account that has been closed within the last 12 months. Bank reserves the right to limit each customer to one new account-related gift incentive per calendar year. Eligibility may be limited based on your account type and ownership role. Account must be funded within 45 days of account opening. No minimum deposit required to open a checking account. Checking accounts may have fees that may reduce earnings and impact ability to meet minimum daily balance requirements. Bonus may be taxable as interest income and reported on IRS Form 1099-INT. Consult your tax advisor. UNIQUE OFFER CODE MUST BE PRESENTED AT ACCOUNT OPENING TO RECEIVE THE BONUS. See your banker for details. Not valid with any other offer.
Now, the offer seems to be to hold $500 for 60 days in a Checking Account to get $250 bonus, available until 30th April 2020 – https://accounts.53.com/banking/offer/checking?&cid=cpc:goog:AO20_Checking:Brand%20Bank:5/3%20bank%20account_b&mkwid=sRQegrnfm_pcrid_319189557041_pkw_5/3%20bank%20account_pmt_b_pdv_c_slid__pgrid_9456544301_ptaid_kwd-367120087851_&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9tzZgarv5gIVS73ACh070QMAEAAYASAAEgL2FPD_BwE

Opened checking on September, and made a total deposit of $15,000. Only $250 bonus posted. Seems like I made a mistake not increasing a balance to $15,500 (500+15,000)
Does anyone have same experience?
To get the extra $250 you had to “meet the requirements above ($500 in first 45 days) and also increase total deposit balances by $15,000 within 45 days of account opening…”
So yes, it had to be $500 + $15,000 = $15,500
Bonus posted!
My 2nd 250$ posted on the 6th as well.
DP time:
8/29 – opened checking in branch
9/4 – reached $500 balance
9/24 – increased total deposits by $15,000 (opened 5-mo CD)
11/4 – $250 bonus (for $500 balance in first 30 days)
12/24 – $250 bonus (for additional $15,000 within 45 days, held for 90 days)
Will close sometime in March.
HARD inquiry on 10/17/2019 Chex report.
Now a $250 bonus through 4/30/2020. You only need to reach a $500 balance within 45 days and maintain a $500+ balance for 60 days. Link remains the same as the previous offer.
10/31/2019 opened in branch with out-of-state ID, a mailed coupon, and the $250 required for $250 bonus
12/31/2019 received the $250 bonus
6/28: Opened with $500 cash deposit in person. They gave me a 53 cents check to highlight mobile deposit.
8/28: $250 bonus posted.
12/30: closed via (easy and short) phone call. I know there’s not early term fee, but always wanna play it safe. This is the second time I’ve gotten a bonus from Fifth Third, last one paid out Dec 2017, and closed March 2018.
I did a few mobile deposits with Western Union MOs, but a system glitch basically didn’t process a deposit, and had I not kept the paper version for over a month, it would have been a terrible mess. Had to see a banker in person, and they had to escalate the issue to find out it was just an error on their IT part; nothing wrong with MO. Was hoping for another MO deposit friendly bank, but definitely avoided them after that incident.
I was charged $60 as” cash bonus Tax withheld’ within the same day of $250 bonus posted. It is my first time to pay for taxes to the bank directly instead of reporting my taxes by myself. Is there anyone who experienced the same situation as me? May I ask what you did?
Are you subject to backup withholding?
If not, you need to contact them and let them know.
