Giant Foods is preparing to relaunch their loyalty program to allow points redemptions for grocery purchases. Previously, these points only worked on gas.
100 points can be redeemed for $1 towards groceries. The gas redemption can get a higher value since 100 points gets $.10 off up to 20-25 gallons for a $2-$2.50 value. But most people don’t get the fuel value from fuel points for various reasons. Being able to use them on groceries gives a neat and easy redemption option.
The wording is “dollars off the shopping basket ($1 for each 100 points) and free products with point redemptions”. I’m not sure if it works on any groceries or only your “shopping basket” purchase.
We recently reported that Stop & shop is now allowing some customers the ability to use their points towards grocery purchases, I imagine that’ll publicly there as well. And Martin’s might do the same. Safeway introduced the ability to do the same earlier in the year.
I’ve activated this feature on my Giant account…I have ~11,000 gas points from the last Visa GC promo…I thought I would have the choice to now apply those points to grocery purchases but that does not appear to be the case… The Giant website is treating gas points as a separate thing from the “Flexible Rewards” that can be applied to groceries.
Am I missing something?
My grocery stores (Giant of Lanover Maryland) only rolled out this new program last week. Right now I have more questions than answers, with the most intriguing question being, can I apply Flexible Rewards that are designated as Grocery Savings points and then use that discount on gift cards? The FAQ and terms seem incomplete.
Also, what happens when I have more Grocery Savings points than my order total? If my order is $8, but I have $10 in Grocery Savings points, what happens to the extra $2?
BTW, this effectively allows your points to expire in 60 days rather than the old 30.
This is for Giant(Carlisle), which is the chain mostly in PA, and operates Martins as well in VA.
Some Giant stores in Southeast PA let you redeem 300 points for a 5% off coupon instead of gas rewards. Not all stores allow this however, one near me does but another one 10 minutes in the other direction does not, they only have gas discount. To maximize this you need to use your 5% on your next big shopping trip. And the certificates only print after you accumulate 300 points. So if you buy $100 of groceries and that puts you over 300 points, you can print out the certificate for use on your NEXT shopping trip. Once you print it it starts a 2 week clock to use it. If you won’t have another big trip for more than 2 weeks you basically lose out. Although you can choose to not print your certificate at the register and wait(bearing in mind that points earned in the previous month expire at end of this month) and go to customer service to print out your certificate when you get to the store for a big haul. It is a fair amount of work and they do not make it extremely easy on purpose.
The logo you’re using is for the other Giant Food Chain, not the PA one that is at issue
I think this press release looks specific to giant Pennsylvania. Giant Maryland/dc/Virginia behaves differently.
Maybe. It does say “Bertram said the new program will help Giant better compete in its Mid-Atlantic market area, where it operates 181 stores under the Giant Food Stores, Martin’s Food Market and Giant Heirloom Market banners.”
100 points get you 10¢ off per gallon so your statement in the second paragraph should be “1000 points gets $1 off up to 20-25 gallons for a $20-$25 value”
Is it not 1000 points for $1 off gas. You have 100 points to $1 gas discount written above. Still better savings for 100 points for $2 approx value.

Hopefully this will apply to Peapod as well. Some of the other promos/codes/digital coupons from the Giant app/site can be used on Peapod; not sure if it’s all of them.
Maybe because a lot of their stores (at least in the Philly area) are nowhere near one of their gas stations. At least the MD/DE/VA version of Giant allowed them to be used at Shell stations.
Hey, this article isn’t quite spot on. In the current program, at least, 100 points doesn’t earn $1 off per gallon of fuel, it earns 10¢ per gallon.
So you’re right that 20 gallons with a 10¢ savings would generate a better earn rate than redeeming the same on groceries, but it’s a 2:1 difference, not a 20:1 difference.
Now, if the new program gives $1 off per gallon for 100 points, that’s a whole different ballgame.
