Marriott has announced plans to remove single use bathroom miniatures with large pump-topped bottles. They expect ‘most’ hotels to make the switch by December 2020, with over 1,000 properties in North America (roughly 20% of total properties) already making the switch. Late last month IHG made the same pledge but with an end date in 2021.
I personally see this announcement as a massive win, large scale use of single use plastics isn’t sustainable in the long term. Hotel chains are often criticized that this is merely a cost cutting measure and nothing else. I disagree with that and believe it’s possible to do the right thing and make more money at the same time, that’s typically when corporations are able to take action and it’s good to see hotel chains doing something positive in this regard.
Just give us a discount and we ll bring our own in the future.
Marriott already does then in some of their “woke” brands like Moxy. I don’t mind it, but I can see how some germiphobe can get pissed. I guarantee they won’t take out the contents and clean/scrub the container at any point.
Will this really have any benefit? Isn’t one large bottle of shampoo (serving maybe 50 people) the same amount of plastic as 50 small bottles? Maybe if the hotel is refilling the large bottles from shampoo delivered in a plastic bag (less plastic)… or if the large bottles are sent back for washing and refilling?? But otherwise? How is this making any difference?
One large bottle is significantly less plastic than a bunch of smaller ones. Just compare a 2L of soda to a 6-pack of the smaller 12oz plastic bottles and scale from there.

What a crock of shit. Even less reason to stay at a Marriott.
Liquid shower gel can’t compare to a bar of soap. Bars are much cheaper (and efficient) to produce. They don’t use any plastic, people use less to clean themselves, and there are programs that collect used hotel soap and recycle them into new soap. I hope they don’t get rid of the bars of soap.
Just another reason to not stay at Marriott hotels. With there award pricing being seasonal after September 14th and them cutting corners I am not sure why anyone would ever stay at them anymore.

Sheraton Steamboat has big bottles last season. They generously gave me brand new bottles upon request.
“Nair in the shampoo” epidemic about to happen. Is Marriott INSANE? It’s part of the cost of the room. Are they going to lower the room rates? OF COURSE NOT. So it’s just another way to stick it to the customer. Their service is lower than low. Like they give a care about the environment. No one is buying that. If some chemical company wanted to book 100 rooms to celebrate dumping toxic waste in a river, they’d welcome them with open arms.
Yeah purely cost saving. Same as airlines that don’t serve peanuts. They don’t care about anyone having an allergic reaction. It is all saving dollars at the expense of the consumer.
