The Offer
No direct link to offer, showing for some when logged into their Bank of America accounts
- Bank of America is offering a bonus of $500 when you open a new checking account and complete ONE the following requirements:
- Set up and receive qualifying direct deposits totalling $10,000 or more within 90 days of account opening
- Make qualifying deposits of $50,000 or more in new money into your personal checking account within 30 days of opening and maintain that balance for 90 days
The Fine Print
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
Easiest account to keep fee free seems to be the Bank of America Advantage Plus Banking account. This has a $12 monthly fee that is waived if you do any of the following:
- Maintain a minimum daily balance of $1,500 or more
- Receive a direct deposit of $250+
- Students under age 24 are eligible to have this fee waived while enrolled in high school, college, university or a vocational program.
- Preferred Rewards clients get this fee waived (waiver applies to first 4 checking accounts).
Early Account Termination Fee
As far as I know there is no early account termination fee.
Our Verdict
Previous best bonus has been $300, that was recently publicly available. This requires $10,000 in direct deposits, this might be a struggle for some readers although in the past some work arounds have worked and it should be possible to cycle the funds making it a little easier. It’s a shame that this is targeted, because I do think it’s definitely worth doing. I think they have targeted this towards people with cards such as the old Merrill+ card, so they probably see these as high value customers and thus the $500 bonus. If this was a public bonus I’d be adding it to the list of the best checking bonuses.

Asked banker during account opening whether I could get the $500 offer if I applied in branch and she said, “No, the branch will see the same exact offer as I see it”. Well, I tried.

Positive DD DP using PenFed CU:
10/8/21 Acct. Opened
11/2/21 $5000 Push (Posted as Income: Paychecks/Salary)
11/3/21 $5000 Push (Posted as Income: Paychecks/Salary)
11/12/21 $500 Bonus Rcv’d
Great DP thanks. I think I’ll give this a shot with PenFed. I still have the account from the last promo they did. So this was just a push from your PenFed checking/savings account?
Glad it’s still working. Dominique had me worried.
Anybody know if Chase YouInvest (Now JPMC Self-Directed) still qualifies as DD? I guess I’ll be the data point unless I hear otherwise, but I do not have/want to tie up $50,000 in savings, nor do I have legit employer DD for that amount.
At least for me, I opened my account on July 1st, tried YouInvest in early July, and didn’t show as DD. Real payroll on Aug 1st. bonus on Aug 13.
Honestly, that seems like quite a high legit DD requirement. Not everyone makes $40,000 net pay per year. In fact I believe that would be about the median, yeah?
Can any of the people who confirmed recently that they have been targeted for the $500 offer,
if the code (or web URL) looks generic or personalised?
Also, if you were targeted by email, was there an option to sign up in branch (or only online through the link)?
Anna xcrunner
TIA… 🙂
The offer url seems to be personalized (long string of numbers). But it does say you can enroll in branch, there is no code for the associate. At the very bottom of the email, there is this note:
Associate Instructions: To enroll customer in offer, select the appropriate offer from Top Opportunities in Interact.
So you could try your luck with an associate?
I just saw your previous comment mentioning me. xcrunner’s answer is accurate. My email and links show the same information.
Did you have any luck enrolling in this offer through an associate in branch?
Jay - ⒿⒶⓨ 🙈 🙉 🙊
Jeff not really.
Went to the branch and asked, mentioning the ‘Opportunities in Interact’ from above comment, and they found a similar qualifying offer for me:
Deposit money (different tiers – starting at 10k, then 25k, …), get bonus amount accordingly.
That seemed to be open to anybody with a business relationship. It’s called “Exclusive offer for Small Business Clients $100 to $500 bonus” and runs till end of year.
It is a personal account though, just no DD option.
Am currently in the 30 days window to fund the account, then have to keep that money for an extra 60 days.
Those who were targeted, did you have some relationship with the bank? What was the mode (email, mail or ad) for getting targeted?
I have a BOA credit card that’s 15+ years old that I rarely use. Have been targeted for this offer a couple of times now via email and never did it. May consider it this time.
I’ve had a closed personal bank account from like 2 yrs ago. I also have a current credit card with them.
Target by email. Have 2 credit cards with them. Did a checking account deal with them in early 2020.
Any successful direct deposit options. The reports from the past (https://www.doctorofcredit.com/knowledge-base/list-methods-banks-count-direct-deposits/#Bank_of_America) are not too great.
Doing the math I would barely squeak by with 10K legit DD in 90 days. I also wanted to see if there were any DD methods that have worked in the past. Doesn’t really look good from the history.
BlueBird Amex prepaid account works as DD (At least worked in August 2021) for me.
It should be the easiest and cheapest way to ‘fake’ DD for BOA. I use it combined with real DD to get 300.
Coded as”
Type:Deposit Description:bluebird DES:EXCHANGE ID:******* INDN:* **** CO ID:XXXXX***** PPD”
Transaction category:Income
(I use * to replace some personal information).
What do you mean combined? Did you need both transactions to go over the DD limit?
I just want to make sure it wasn’t the real DD that triggered the bonus by itself.
Also how long did it take to get the bonus after your DD?
Can someone who has been targeted before please tell me where you see this when logged in? Also, does anyone have any clue whatsoever how they target people for this? I have 2 new biz cards, and $1,900 in personal savings. Wondering what I can do to increase my odds of being targeted in future rounds?
I got a targeted email for $300 checking account bonus
Email subject “You’ve been selected for a $300 limited-time bonus offer”
