Target announced an extended return policy for all Target-brand products for up to a year. They also extended the one-year return policy for all items purchased through the Gift Registry.

Previously, returns were allowed for 90 days and an additional 30 days for REDcard holders. Under the new rules, all 32 of Target brand products will be eligible for a full year and an additional 30 days for Target REDcard holders. Some of the better-known Target labels are Up & Up, Archer Farms, Threshold and Room Essentials. (Complete list below.)
The move comes on the heels of the new threshold for free shipping at target.com which was lowered to $25, indicating a shift in branding themselves as comsumer-centric and easy to deal with. The company also mentioned that they’ll be more relaxed about accepting returns from those who don’t have receipts. As always, you don’t need the actual receipt – in any case – since they can pull up the item for return by swiping the card it was purchased with.
On a similar note, Target will now allow returns on items bought through the Gift Registry for a full year from the event date. This policy covers all items, even non Target-branded.
Registry returns must be in new, unused condition, while store-brand items can sometimes be returned in used condition, if the item proved defective.

Here’s the list of Target-branded items with the one-year return policy: Archer Farms, Ava + Viv, Boots & Barkley, C9 by Champion, Circo, Chefmate, Cherokee, Distributed by Target, Durabuilt, Embark, Fieldcrest, Gilligan & O’Malley, Kids Made Modern, Liz Lange, Merona, Mossimo, Mossimo Supply Co., Nate Berkus, ProSpirit, Room Essentials, Shaun White, Simply Balanced, Smith & Hawken, Sonia Kashuk, Spritz, Sutton & Dodge, Threshold, up & up, Wine Cube, Xhilaration, Yoobi.
Here’s a look at some popular retailer’s policies:
Target | 90 days - most items 1 year - store branded | 30 additional days for REDcard holders |
Walmart | 90 days | |
Amazon | 30 days | Third-party sellers may have different policies |
Best Buy | 15 days | Longer for Best Buy Elite members |
Costco | Most items - forever Electronics - 90 days | |
Home Depot | 90 days | gasoline-powered equipment only 30 days |
Lowe's | Most items - 90 days Major appliances - 30 days |
I always thought Amazon’s 30 day policy was standard, but it seems that most major retailers usually allow up to 90 days.
What’s the saying? Once you hit rock bottom, you can only go up? Target is notorious for even being honest with their customers returns. When I got married and had oodles of Target GCs, I bought and promptly returned a toilet seat due to the fact that it had a product blemish where it looked like someone had left #2 on the seat. I actually had to discuss this concern with a manager as I had opened the package.
So this new returns policy is just common sense? It’s riddled with so many exclusions, it’s almost a joke. I love how marketing can spin anything that any honest company should already be doing as a benefit to the consumer.
I always thought of Target as pretty good with customer service, but I guess I haven’t returned that many items.
One year seems generous in comparison to the standard.
If you’re trying to complete a large MS, could you purchase a big ticket item from target, pay off your CC and return the item after the points post?
Nice thought. I don’t have any data on it and it’s definitely possible that they’ll claw-back the points. I wouldn’t rely on such a scheme for a signup bonus personally.
Chuck, did you check to see if this specifically applies to prepaid REDcard usage (in addition to the credit and/or debit REDcard product)?
I’m sure it does. The prepaid REDcard has the exact same benefits as the other REDcards, AFAIK.
I guess I was curious whether you actually saw the word “prepaid” yourself in any of the disclosures or contacted Target about it.
I know generally speaking they have the same existing benefits, but being that this is a newly added benefit, wanted to make sure.
No, I don’t have any particular info on the prepaid REDcard with regards to this.
