Update 4/8/20: American has extended its offer to waive change fees for customers who have summer travel through Sept. 30, 2020. The offer is available for any of American’s fares, and customers will have until Dec. 31, 2021, for future travel. Fare rules may apply depending on the ticket.
- Any ticket purchased on or before April 7, 2020, for travel through Sept. 30, 2020, will not incur change fees prior to travel. Customers must pay any fare difference, if applicable, at time of ticketing of the new fare.
- All AAdvantage® award tickets are included in this offer.
- Customers are allowed to change their origin and destination cities as part of this new offer.
- Travel must be completed by Dec. 31, 2021.
Update 3/10/20: American Airlines has added new terms that cover flights booked on or before March 1st. Change fee is waived if:
- Are traveling on an American Airlines flight
- Bought your ticket by March 1, 2020
- Are scheduled to travel March 10, 2020 – April 30, 2020
- Can travel March 10, 2020 – December 31, 2020
- Don’t change your origin or destination city
- Rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference
[Update 3/6/20: American has now extended the fee waiver through March 31. Further, they’ve eliminated the need to cancel 14 days prior – now, anytime prior to flight leaving you can change the flight. (ht OMAAT)]
With everyone worried about the coronavirus, American Airlines announced today they are waiving change fees for travel booked between March 1 and March 16th. They join Jetblue and Alaska Air who make similar offers.
Notable differences:
- American is making the policy for all flights booked until January 26, 2021. That’s much longer than the June 2020 end-date given by JetBlue and Alaska.
- With American, tickets must be changed at least 14 days prior to the departure of your original flight. JetBlue allows changes up to 24 hours before and Alaska seems to allow it anytime until the flight.
- This is obviously a huge limitation in the entire benefit as the whole idea is to give flexibility in times of crisis, and the 14 day window makes it much less helpful.
- With American, the changed travel itinerary must be completed within one year. That’s the same as JetBlue and better than Alaska’s policy giving until December 31, 2020.
- American expressly excludes bookings through AAdvantage award tickets. JetBlue and Alaska include award bookings.
- None of the airlines are waiving fees for flights booked before the fee waiver was announced.
Will be interesting to see what policies the other major airlines roll out.

American is officially allowing miles to be redeposited with no fees for awards booked by May 31 for travel through September 30.

Does anyone know if this applies to Web specials?
Also wondering if this applies to Web Specials
American Airlines is also waiving these fees for redemption flights on AA metal. After you book a redemption ticket, you can see a notification on the app – “you can cancel your trip online, and your miles will be safe. There’s no need to call right now. When you’re ready to travel again, or simply want your miles back, you can contact us.”. In the same paragraph, there’s a link to Coronavirus updates.
This makes it sound like these miles are NOT automatically put back.
United needs to extend there vouchers to 2021.
Great news with award tickets being included now.
Are award flights included for cancelations or only changes? A family member has an award trip coming up in early May. Can he cancel and get miles deposited without a fee now? I asked him to hold off on canceling it. Thanks.
I was just able to cancel 4 award flights in June and July with no redeposit fees. Two were SAAver awards and two were web special awards. Miles back in my account within half an hour and now just waiting on taxes to be refunded.
Thanks Avi. I’ll let him know and ask him to try calling them today.
Interesting. I just reached out to the AA Twitter team and was told that I would have to pay a redeposit fee for award travel in June. I could, however, keep it “open” for use at a later date.
Try calling? I imagine it’s at the discretion of the agent.
Was this for award flights on AA metal?
Thanks, thats perfect and exactly what I needed to know as we have award flights on Cathy and Fiji in Sept.
Tax and surcharge were only $115 – but adding a redeposit fee to rescue miles that may or not have any value in 2021. I’m pragmatic; seeing that Italy’s still under lockdown likely till May or the indeterminate future – and much of the globe.
So if I can get taxes and fees back better still.
BTW we completed MSR on that SW referral last month, statement just closed so 10K RR points for that referral should post.
lol, so we now have a SW CP with 155K RR points.
Thanks again for using my SW link,
YoniPDX ! I think I received the 10k points on March 4. MSR doesn’t have to be met for the referral points to be awarded, right? I too am swimming in SW points with a CP and nowhere to go.
Best of luck with your AA awards. The disruption to the travel industry actually worked to my benefit because award space for next year is wide open (and I mean REALLY wide open). I was able to get the exact flights I wanted in January, including Cathay first class BOS-HKG. Fingers crossed the trip happens.
Thanks for the reply T and Avi. I had the family member call and they cancelled the award ticket without any fees. Miles will be deposited back to his account within 24 hours.
I knew it back in March, but didn’t inform anyone before using up all my miles, as I thought people might abuse it, resulting in AA changing the policy
I just cancelled 4 award flights. I guess I am SOL with American Airlines. Hilton waived the cancellation fees. If I cancel American Award flights do I get the taxes refunded?
Also curious about AA award flight taxes. Did you find the answer?
Called to have my miles for a Web Saver award and the rep said that miles and taxes would be returned.
AA is refunding miles to accounts even for discount MileSAAver trips with no change/cancellation fees. Just canceled a PHL-> SFO trip booked in Jan and got all the miles reinstated. They also refunded the taxes paid.
If you booked in cash, you have to use the credit by the end of this year. There is no such clause with miles though. Double confirmed with CS.
I had 2 AA award trips (one on which was a web special non refundable fare):
1. Argentina to Spain in late April on LATAM. and 2. US to Argentina in mid-May on AA.
Nether was under their adversary waved fees (yet). I had signed up for the free promo Gold status last week, so when I called today, I was connected immediately to a Platinum desk rep. The lady was like, what do you need canceled? I told her ideally both as my travel plans had been affected by the coronavirus (which is indeed the case). And she said, sure no problem, I will wave the redeposit fees and issue full refund of miles and taxes! Not clear if I got just a really nice rep or the fact I got connected to the Platinum line made a difference.
I got the same treatment (also with the elite line – got free Platinum recently). Had some flights home from NYC and canceled AA web special and got pts reinstated, no charge. He said they’re doing that till April 30 for any AA web special bookings because they can’t change them in the system. I don’t know if they’ll modify that policy but that’s what he told me.
So I rebooked my flights home from NYC at half the cost and can cancel even 10 minutes before the flight if I end up not needing them (it’s to get home from a cruise which might be delayed/canceled!).
Update: I called tonight to cancel those rebooked flights home from NYC in April. Platinum CSR told me the computer wouldn’t let her refund the purchase because I bought the tickets March 10 (after March 1st in other words). Going to try calling back later and cancelling. And/or hope for schedule change/cancellation so I can get the miles back that way.
Booked last year, for a summer trip to Hong Kong (before they even had the protests).
This morning the AA travel advisory page says
If you’re traveling to / through / from:
Hong Kong (HKG)
The change fee is waived if you:
Booked an American Airlines flight
Bought your ticket by January 28, 2020
Are scheduled to travel January 28 – July 1, 2020
So I was able to call in and get a full refund for 7 tickets, no fees. Just have a couple other airlines to get refunds from left..
I booked a flight a few days ago using AA evouchers and had to cancel. Will these be credited back under the COVID19 waiver?
You may have better luck calling in today. To get through AA’s automated phone system I told the robots I wanted to change a flight and not give my confirmation number. Then you put your name on the waiting list to be called back by a human. If you give your confirmation number it’ll tell you they’re busy and hang up on you with no callback.
The AA rep I spoke with was more than happy to cancel a web special award booking I had for tomorrow. She seemed annoyed at AA for making support tell people who booked before March 1st to go fuck themselves…then change the policy a day later. No way to make these changes online. Those poor people answering phones for the airlines 🙁
