Our Verdict
This is a military bank, but I’m not actually sure if you need to be military to sign up for this or not. The bonus itself looks to be worth doing if you’re eligible. If anybody has more information please share below. Bit annoying that it requires a direct deposit now.

Post history:
- Update 10/11/20: Extended until October 31, 2020
- Update 9/7/20: Deal is back, but now requires a direct deposit. Also need to use debit card 12 times now instead of only 5. Hat tip to reader HJF
I called via phone to customer service to see if I had any tax forms and they said that they can only instruct me on how to do it online. They don’t have access to that.
I chatted with customer service and they said that they weren’t able to see any tax forms, only eStatements under my closed account
Nearing end of February, still no tax docs. I don’t have online access either to check online. Probably going to assume what Nikole mentioned and assume it was a rebate
My login to the bank still exists, and I’ve sent a msg to ask about this.
The reply was to visit the eDocuments menu..
But since the checking account has been removed, all that I get is this:
“There are no accounts associated with your account that are allowed to retrieve documents electronically.”
I know this is kinda Early but has anyone received a 1099-INT from either of the two banks. I know sometimes they dont send when Debit card Transactions are involved. Just looking for some DPs.
Not yet… keeping my fingers crossed.
Wondering same thing too. Nothing yet. Too lazy to call
I checked my online documents and I haven’t seen them generated. It may not be consider interest income as we had to use our debit cards to receive it and it may be considered a rebate instead.
That’s my guess too. Gadget 🕵️ Bank Bonus Geek by chance did you receive one?
Not yet, via mail. Online access is dead for me.
This bank is ridiculous. I’ve emailed and spoken to numerous people over the past month about meeting their requirements and they keep saying they will look into it and call me back and they never do. Is there a governing organization that people complain to about banks when they don’t keep their word on these promos? I’ve seen something before but can’t remember.
CFPB
Hit my requirement in November, just got the bonus today… After I literally sent them a message every day for the past week…
Just stating for the record that I never received my debit card, lol.
I didn’t sign up until late November so no real surprise; but as a DP of what happens if you don’t nag them telling them that you need a card (answer: they do nothing).
I was also charged the $4.50 fee for paper statements (ETA: twice); as well as one statement fee for being below balance. Canceling soon…
If you plan to keep your Armed Forces Bank account for little bit longer, check your email to see if you receive this:
Try Zell and get a $5 eGift card: must have a bank account in the U.S. to use Zelle®. To qualify for this one-time $5 eGift card, the Zelle® user must complete a minimum of one (1) qualifying transaction between 12/19/2020 and 12/31/2020.
Qualifying transactions:
Add and Pay a new Zelle® contact
New Zelle® contact must be added during campaign time period
Zelle® transaction must be scheduled and complete during campaign time period
Zelle® transaction must be $5 or more
Qualifying Zelle® payments must be paid to a person different from the Zelle® account holder.
Academy started running a similar campaign in Mid November, but it was limited to the first 1,200 customers.
I saw that too. But Zelle has been a pain in the ass for me in the past. Determining the link to the correct bank is correct then ensuring the other person has theirs setup right. The risk the transaction is flagged by the bank and all the hoops that you have to go thru to it to work. Just a waste of time and stressful. But then again that was for transactions well over $5 but still it has a bad taste in my mouth.
I did not do Zelle much, but all past transfers went smoothly. They were small amounts (less than $100), though. I did the Zelle promotion for Investors Bank a couple of weeks back, and just received the $5 e-gift card bonus. Based on your experience, what the threshold amount of a Zelle transfer that might be flagged as risky to trigger bank hold and audit?
I got the email and have yet to get my $5. How long is the delay getting the $5?
ben #2 I have closed my account and did not do it, so I do not know. Interestingly, the promotion does not say when the e-gift card will be issued. https://www.afbank.com/personal/accounts/zelle/offer-dec?utm_medium=email&utm_source=emfluence&utm_campaign=zelle
Hassle-free closing via SM with zero balance. It may take them a couple of days to respond and say that your request to close the account has been submitted, and your account will be closed the next day.
Have any of you closed your accounts yet after receiving the bonus? If so, was there any kind of hassle?
Closed mine after 90 days. No problems closing the account. I just pulled the balance out, then sent SM to close. They responded within a day or two and closed the account.
Thanks. I usually ask the bank if they prefer I pull the funds out before closing. That way if they charge some kind of fee it is their fault and not mine.
To avoid that risk, this is what I typically do: wait until the statement has closed, pull out all the money to leave a balance of zero, and then request to close the account. Eric
Yes, I also waited to pull funds at the beginning of the new monthly cycle for that reason. Good idea, just to be safe.
Monthly Service Fee $10
I have been doing 12 debits every month to waive the fee without any problem. This month I was charged $10 fee?
Anyone else have this problem? I just sent them a secure message to inquire, so we shall see.
I wa skits charged a $4.50 paper statement fee, even though I had that turned off (account has been open for a few months already).
Same here, I was also charged the $4.50 last month.
I signed up for Estatements, no charge the first month. The second month they charged it and I saw that it had flipped to “paper statements?” I changed it back to Estatements, yet it flipped to paper again when the 3rd statement came out.
Can’t wait to close this account. I had opened both Armed Forces and Academy, and they have both been trouble.
Same here!! They flipped it to “Paper statements” automatically just to charge the fee. Ridiculous!

You need a direct deposit to waive the $10 monthly fee.
I thought it was DD or 12 debits……….???
You must have missed my comment here.
