Oxygen Bank is a fee-free digital checking account marketed toward ‘free thinkers, rebels and entrepreneurs.’ The main feature that entices me is the cashback offers on debit purchases. There’s also a $25 referral bonus.
Overview
Here are the major highlights of the account:
- Mobile and web option
- No fees
- FDIC Insured up to $250,000
- Connect external accounts via Plaid
- Multiple virtual cards
- Map of free ATMs nearby
Flat fee line of credit- Support for personal and business accounts
- Debit card with cashback boosts (see below)
Cashback Boosts
The cashback boosts seem similar to Cash App, in that they will be rotating. This is what I’m currently seeing for my offers:
- Walmart – 7%, valid for 60 days, unlimited uses until you hit $10 in cashback (12 hour cooldown, minimum $5 purchase)
- Trader Joe’s – 7%, valid for 90 days, unlimited uses until you hit $7 in cashback (4 hour cooldown, minimum $3 purchase)
- Rideshare and Transportation – 5%, valid for 30 days, unlimited uses until you hit $10 in cashback (2 hour cooldown, minimum $4 purchase)
- Pharmacies – 5%, valid for 90 days, unlimited uses until you hit $5 in cashback (2 hour cooldown, minimum $2 purchase)
- Gas – 5%, valid for 30 days, unlimited uses until you hit $10 in cashback (24 hour cooldown, minimum $5 purchase)
- Gaming – 5%, valid for 90 days, unlimited uses until you hit $5 in cashback (2 hour cooldown, minimum $2 purchase)
- Food Delivery – 5%, valid for 90 days, unlimited uses until you hit $5 in cashback (2 hour cooldown, minimum $2 purchase)
- Food and Coffee – $1, valid for 90 days, unlimited uses until you hit $10 in cashback (2 hour cooldown, minimum $2 purchase)
These offers will likely change over time. Hopefully Oxygen can continue to offer useful merchants. Currently, the minimum cashback redemption is $10.
One benefit to Oxygen over Cash App is that Oxygen is an actual bank account, and therefore can be linked to cashback apps. Pei and Bumped have support for Oxygen, while Drop and Bits of Stock do not.
One negative to Oxygen compared to Cash App is that you have to fund the account via ACH instead of an instant debit. Therefore you have to plan more in advance if you don’t want a lot of funds sitting in Oxygen, which earns no interest. However, the interest you lose from letting a few hundred sit in Oxygen for even up to a year doesn’t come close to the cashback you’ll earn from spending this balance at boosted merchants. You can, however, fund your account with cash ‘at 90,000+ stores, including CVS and Walgreens’, which will ‘be available within a few hours’ (retail service fee applies).
For the flat cashback category ($1 back for Food and Coffee), you’ll earn more back by using Oxygen for purchases under $50 if your alternative cashback earns 2% ($1/0.02 = $50).
Referrals
- There is also currently a referral program where the referrer earns $25 for every person who funds their account with at least $200 and uses the Oxygen debit card 5 times within 60 days.
- New member also gets $25 when they open the card using a referral link and fund their account with $200 and use the Oxygen debit card 5 times within 60 days.
- Referral bonus posts within 10 business days of qualifying.
- Your referral link can be found in the app.
- Please do not leave referrals in the comments; Oxygen stipulates that referrals are restricted to personal friends, family, and known acquaintances. Network with friends to get/give referrals.
Our Verdict
Lots of banks are digital and fee-free these days, so for me, the only worthwhile feature is the high cash back rate at some of the boosted merchants. I’ll surely be using my card at Walmart, Trader Joe’s (when the Cash App 10% grocery boost is no longer offered for Trader Joe’s), and dining. It’s also nice that you can double dip with cashback apps.
Does anyone know what happened to the funds in the account?
They mailed out paper checks for any money left in the account. fdic
I have my DP from April literally two comments below….
https://www.doctorofcredit.com/oxygen-bank-account-review-cashback-boosts/#comment-1829665
They did not ACH it out… they did not call or email when they mailed the checks.
They didn’t even take down their application… as someone emailed me in May asking if the bonus was still available. LoL They probably fired the guy with the webserver password too quickly.
Thank you, I know I should try to read first 🙂
I dont remember getting any check, I typically leave only $1 so I guess no big deal. How much do you typically leave in a dormant account?
I leave a dollar because that way I can at least ACH that out, I have seen that quite a few ACH services wont let you transfer less than a $
Depends on the bank and the circumstances. $1… $5… $20. My P2 got a 1 cent check.from Oxygen. They were mailed from The Bancorp Bank. Reference line: Oxygen Account Closure
You could reach out to them. Phone number on the check was 1-877-554-2339.
Looking at their site today, I thought I might be in an alternate reality.

Weird they never put a note there about the shutdown. Maybe they fired the person that knew the password to edit the site?
P1 & P2 account close-out checks arrived today. My P1 account got shutdown over a year ago, but somehow they found $8.xx for me.
For P2, left one-cent in the account, in case there was a referral bonus in the wind. No such luck. They spent money to mail a 1-cent check. LoL
Happy they are closing, terrible off-shore cust service and a very wonky website. Notice how Fintechs were rarely acquired by real banks, and when they were “read ‘Cabbage’ “, it was a total failure.
Support was bad and nothing but static but the card and app were awesome (before the Elements redesign). Nothing else like it.
Interestingly I got the email stating my account would be closed despite never having an open account with them; my application was denied
I tried to reopen my (P1) account a couple times, and those email addresses I used got the notice as well. I hope they send me a check for each one. j/k
Was nice while it lasted, but I jumped ship when they heavily nerfed their cash back rates.
A company like this can’t survive without a constant influx of VC money.
No company could’ve survived offering $1 off $3 coffees every 24 hours.
So….. should I get Global Entry/TSA Precheck with my Fire tier benefit before it ends? 👀
The only Fire that debit card is getting is burned. 🔥
The card is metal, it doesn’t burn. Good for shimmy-ing doors.
Good. Glad they died. I used real direct deposit and they denied my bonus, but everyone else using fake direct deposits and they got their bonus. Bye!
That’s what DPs are for man.
Did you file a complaint with the CFPB? If not and you met all of the requirements, you should.
Yes, I did file a complaint with CFPB. Basically, they said Oxygen replied to my request, and that their decision stands.
Ran out of oxygen
Yikes. I had a terrible experience with them. Submitted a CFPB complaint a couple weeks ago because they never gave me my referral bonus for $100. Wonder what this means for that!
Did you get the $100 referral after you filed CFPB?
Based on the sentence, no they did not. Critical reading skills are important!
Thomas,
It’s ironic that you would bash the critical reading skills of Ben N.. You either didn’t notice or didn’t understand that he wrote “after you filed CFPB”.
Heather “Submitted a CFPB complaint a couple weeks ago” after “they never gave [her the] referral bonus for $100.” so presumably she has not heard back yet.
I just realize that okay but it was too late for me to edit that. I have autism and saying like that hurts my feeling.
I meant to reply to Thomas not you Eric 🔗. Anyway Thomas you hurt my feeling for saying that.
Ben N.,
There is absolutely nothing wrong with your question to Heather. It’s the type of question that I would have asked also. However, I probably would have waited a couple of weeks to ask for an update since she just posted that comment yesterday.
Anyway, Thomas should apologize to you but I doubt that he will. I’m still waiting for an apology from a few different people on DoC for snide remarks and/or attacks that have been done to me. I will not hold my breath though and you shouldn’t either.
The irony of telling someone critical reading skills are important when you yourself have trouble. Thomas
P1 did, P2 did not.
Please keep the convo below civil and kind!
